Though there are plenty of major pop stars in the world, few of them command as much fear and respect as Beyoncé.
Born in 1981 in Houston, Texas, Beyoncé has been performing since she was a little girl—and started taking the world by storm almost immediately.
Though she may now be best known for her solo career, she also got all kinds of fame and acclaim for her performance with Destiny’s Child in the ‘90s and 2000s. Needless to say, she remains and inspiration to all kinds of artists around the world.
But she’s also a difficult artist to interpret or cover.
Ever since American Idol premiered, television has been awash with reality singing competition shows.
Though that show started America’s thirst for competition among singers, other shows have come along since that have complicated and perfected the form. One of the most popular of these is The Voice, a show that started in Holland and has since become an international franchise.
For those who don’t know, the show works by having contestants do “blind auditions” before a panel of judges who can’t see them. After performing, the judges can hit their buzzers to turn around and compete for that performer to join their team (if they like what they hear).
Since the original version of the show, it has spawned all kinds of offshoots and spin-offs, including The Voice Kids.
As the name suggests, The Voice Kids is the same show with the added twist that all the contestants are especially young.
One particularly amazing audition happened on the show’s 2019 season. The contestant was a 13-year-old named Thapelo, and he decided to take on Beyoncé’s signature ballad “Halo” for his performance.
Though it goes without saying, the song is notoriously difficult to sing. Beyond that, it also has a dedicated fanbase—so not delivering on a cover of it has its own costs as well! With all that in mind, Thapelo stepped out and the backing music started playing.
Within a moment, one of the judges cringed—she knew just how hard it would be.
Still, as soon as Thapelo’s voice came out, it was clear just how talented he was.
Although the song is originally designed for a female vocalist, he dropped the register slightly and immediately started singing in the smoothest, most confident voice.
After hearing just a few notes, he got his first yes! What’s most incredible about the performance is just how incredibly precise it is throughout. Though there are plenty of runs, rises and falls, he soars over them all!
A moment later, he gets to the chorus—and gets two more yeses!
Although his performance had been incredible up to that point, there was still one more hold out.
Regardless, he sings his heart out for the last few notes of the song and gives it all he’s got. A moment later, he gets the final yes from the judges to get a full four-chair turn! As soon as he sees what he’s done, he has the biggest smile on his face.
The entire crowd gets on their feet to give him a round of applause and his family cries backstage. Though it’s plain to see, Thapelo is definitely someone special among a whole host of special someones!
Congratulations to Thapelo on a performance for the ages! Be sure to watch the entire thing in the link below:
