Have you ever seen a flash mob in person? If you haven’t actually participated in a flash mob or seen one in person, you’ve probably at least seen one somewhere on the internet. For those who don’t know, flash mobs are unusual public performances that are set up in advance and mainly work as a social experiment. A group of people suddenly assemble to do some kind of performance and then disperse just as quickly. Although these events usually take place in a big city or in a performance space, more and more people are doing them locally as a result of the internet.

One group of teachers decided to do a flash mob of their own to hilarious effect.

The performance took place at Whitmer High School in Toledo, Ohio last year.

It was a homecoming pep assembly like any other with the principal addressing the crowd. After a moment though, “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars starts playing—and other teachers march out and push the principal out of the way. As the music builds, all the teachers get in formation and get ready to bust a move.

When the beat drops, everyone starts dancing.

Although the performance starts with only five or six teachers, things escalate pretty quickly.

After some initial smooth moves, about 10 more teachers join in the fun and everyone starts twirling and clapping to the beat. After that, even more teachers join in—and then the mascots do! As the performance reaches a peak, the teachers form a dance circle and pull out their signature moves.

In the middle of everything, one teacher even does a pretty impressive version of the worm!

After everything, the entire staff is assembled on the floor waving their arms and stomping.

When the song finally ends, everyone strikes a pose and the entire student body bursts into applause! Above all, the performance reminds us all what it was like to be young and in high school. Most of us probably thought of our teachers as the “bosses” of the school, telling us what to do and when to do it. If that’s too harsh, we at least thought of them as adults who were different or more serious than we were. As this performance shows, most teachers are just fun-loving people like their students are and that every school is a vibrant community.

Thanks for a great performance to the teachers of Whitmer High!
