Music legend Barbra Streisand has a voice that’s enchanted listeners for decades. Over the years, she’s also teamed up with other talented artists for duets – including Judy Garland, Celine Dion, and Neil Diamond.

Streisand released a duet album called Partners, and on it is a rendition of “Somewhere” from her and world-renowned vocalist Josh Groban. Let’s just say the combination of artists is magical.

“Somewhere” comes from the 1957 musical West Side Story.

Streisand recorded a version of the song for her 1985 show tune compilation, The Broadway Album, an album she earned a Grammy for. Her music video has over 15 million views on YouTube.

As a Broadway enthusiast, Groban was thrilled when he discovered he’d be covering “Somewhere” with Streisand for her album Partners.

He explained in an interview:

“Whenever there’s a project like this where everybody kinda has to pick and take what’s given – you want to call dibs on what you think is gonna be your favorite. “Somewhere” would have been on the top of my list anyway. But they came to me with this song.”

Groban has a history of singing Broadway music.

If you’re a Groban fan, then you’re aware that his vocal talent pairs beautifully with Broadway songs. In fact, he released his own show tune album in 2015 called Stages, which contains a variety of renditions. There’s even a Phantom of the Opera duet between him and Kelly Clarkson!

When speaking about “Somewhere,” Groban shared:

“I’ve loved West Side Story since I was a kid. Musical theater was my major when I got signed.”

They first met a while back.

According to Streisand, she and Groban first worked together when he was only a teenager. She explained:

“I was supposed to do something with Bocelli, but he couldn’t do it. This was years ago, Josh was only 19. And so David Foster had him sing on the Bocelli track. We released the record with Josh, but he was like a step-in singer… But I always thought he was wonderful!”

The Partners album also contains duets with music artists like Billy Joel, Andrea Bocelli, John Legend, Michael Bublé, and Blake Shelton.

For Josh, having the opportunity to create a rendition of “Somewhere” with Streisand was a “huge honor.” It’s apparent from how it turned out too that they make an excellent duo!

In the video, the footage shows the pair working together at the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage in Los Angeles.

“Somewhere” is famously sung by characters Maria and Tony during the film West Side Story. But in this version, it’s Groban and Streisand who are taking everyone’s breath away.

It’s a combination of two powerhouses in one song.

Streisand and Groban are both musicians that possess an unbelievably powerful voice – and neither of them disappoints during their duet. They’re also accompanied by an orchestra that helps make it a complete masterpiece.
