Take a great cover band and an amazing guitarist with an angelic voice, then add one of the most famous synthpop songs ever to that mix and tell us what you get.
The result is this funk cover of “Forever Young” played by Scary Pockets featuring Madison Cunningham. The girl made the song sound phenomenal all over again, and the band just added an extra spark to it all
Alphaville’s 1984 debut album Forever Young was written during the Cold War, hence the “hoping for the best, but expecting the worst; are you gonna drop the bomb or not?”
“Forever Young” was not a huge hit when it first came out, but it was used in numerous movies and TV shows, that it became a well-known track everyone seems to like. No one knows exactly what it means to be forever young, but Madison made a very good cover that makes you believe that the youth is eternal.
In pursuit of the funk, Scary Pockets released this video in 2019 and it has already been viewed more than a million times on YouTube.
The cover is also available on Spotify and iTunes. Another interesting fact we feel needs to be mentioned is that Scary Pockets get a small affiliate fee every time someone clicks on their link and buys some musical gear!
Since the band has more than half a million Youtube subscribers, we hope that the fee they earn will accumulate into a nice profit to support their work.
To make sure we’re on the same page, Scary Pockets are a dynamic funk band from Los Angeles.
For now, the band consists of Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte. Lerman toured as a bassist for American singer-songwriter Ben Folds. Interestingly enough, he also worked as a musical director for John Legend.
Conte, on the other hand, is an American musician, singer, DJ, entrepreneur and filmmaker.
Together, they are a powerful combination called Scary Pockets, and they release weekly music videos. You’ll be surprised by the amount of amazing content you can find on their YouTube channel.
Madison’s 2019 album Who Are You Now was nominated for the Best Americana Album in the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Described as a “musician with the new spin on West Coast folk-rock,” Madison continues to surprise her audience with songs that are always an interesting blend of electric sound, jazz melody and a little bit of rock..
She’s confident on stage, her singing is engaging and the way that she enjoys converting the song into a funk piece is contagious.
We love that the cover is so much different from the original, especially the vocals. It feels like hearing something completely new, and Madison knows how to bring her style into it.
Cunningham’s brass solo sounds very nice when combined with a funk band!
The voice is so delicate and so strong at the same time, and that’s probably the most enchanting part of the performance.
We love what they did with “Forever Young”, but we’re hoping they also play “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder one day—we’re guessing it would sound awesome.
When Madison sings, the music feels warm and overwhelming in the best way possible.
Keep up the good work, all of you! We’ll see you at one of your future sessions.
