Although having a strong voice and technical ability are important to good singing, the choice of song is also so important.
As anyone who watches these reality singing competition knows, a performance can be a make or break depending on how good of a fit it is for a given performer. Even if someone is incredibly talented but they take a risk on a song that they can’t quite nail (or they pick a song that’s too safe and so they can’t shine), it ends up hurting the overall effect.
On the other hand, when someone picks a perfect song, they can really stun the audience.
And that’s exactly what happened on a recent episode of The Voice.
As everyone knows, The Voice is another singing competition show where the judges begin with their backs turned to the contestants in a “blind audition” round. Because of this, nobody knows who is singing what song and there’s an added element of surprise. On this particular episode, a woman named Rizzi Myers stepped out to perform.
Although she was definitely talented, she had a secret weapon up her sleeve.
Rather than do a safe song, Myers decided to take on “Breathin” by Ariana Grande.
While Grande is definitely a popular singer and the song is well-known, people hesitate to choose her music because her voice is so incredibly powerful and hard to imitate. Fortunately, Myers was up to the challenge.
Right as she steps out, she adds her own delicacy to the song while still making some of the melodic runs her own. When she hits the first significant run, she decides to invert it from how Grande does it.
Immediately, judge Kelly Clarkson hits her buzzer—and she blocks her fellow judge John Legend in the process!
Though it goes without saying, Myers’ performance only gets stronger and stronger.
Before long, both Legend and judge Blake Shelton have turned around as well… but Legend is disappointed to see that he’s been blocked!
Regardless, Clarkson definitely made the right move because Myers’ range is absolutely staggering! When it’s all over, Myers gets a massive round of applause.
When it’s time for the judges to talk, he shares his frustration at being prevented from working with her!
As Myers explains, she lives in Nashville but she’s originally from Kansas City, Missouri.
Still, Myers says that she’s not quite as country as Shelton might think she is… and the battle is on between Clarkson and Shelton for her talent! Though it’s tough, the game changer is that Myers and Clarkson have met before! By this point, the decision is pretty much already made: she’s going to go with Kelly Clarkson!
By the end of it all, the crowd erupts into applause.
Needless to say, Myers’ song choice here really allowed her staggering vocal talents to shine through.
Though taking a risk like that one could’ve easily backfired, Myers showed everyone that she had the chops to go toe to toe with virtually any powerhouse pop singer in the game. Now that she’s on Kelly’s team, it remains to be seen what will happen to her on the rest of the show… but everyone has some serious expectations!
