American Idol has been around for a very long time—and for good reason.
Although the show first came on the air in 2002, American Idol has gone through all kinds of changes over the years including new rules allowing instruments (and group performances in some cases), new judges and generally a new feel for the show.
What’s remained the same though is that a panel of judges vote on all kinds of talented singers and performers, culminating in one person being crowned the winner.
Still, one of the most consistently fascinating parts of the show are the audition rounds.
While there have been tons of great performances on the show over the years, this one was something special.
The performer we’re talking about is Alejandro Aranda, a 24-year-old, laid back singer from Pomona, California who taught himself how to sing and play guitar.
His musical career started with a bunch of street performances—and he even came in ready to perform an original song! As he talks to the judges, he explains that the song is called “Out Loud” and that it’s about how Aranda grew into being a more honest person as he got older.
With all that out of the way, he starts his performance.
As the song starts, Aranda strums his guitar rapidly before he starts singing.
Right away, it’s clear that Aranda is a natural performer. He has the classic aura of a great singer-songwriter, complete with a very soulful delivery and an understated way about him.
Though his voice isn’t the most powerful or technically impressive that the judges have ever heard, his guitar playing is truly incredible—and his scratchy voice and soulful delivery definitely go a long way.
As the camera cuts away to judge Luke Bryan, it’s clear that his jaw is on the floor.
When it’s all over, all three judges get on their feet to give him a standing ovation!
Right off the bat, judge Lionel Richie says that he’s so inspired by him and that he needs to hear him play a second song on the piano.
Although Aranda says he’s a little bit rusty, it doesn’t take him long to jump right into another incredible performance with the exact same energy—and all the judges can do is stare at one another in disbelief.
Needless to say, Aranda is one of the most multi-faceted talents that the judges have ever seen.
When the results are in, all three judges are completely stunned.
After his piano song, Bryan says that he feels like he’s in the presence of greatness. After that, judge Katy Perry asks him a pointed question: “Do you think you’re the next American Idol?”
Although he gives them a humble answer, Perry says that she thinks she’s looking at the winner. Though it goes without saying, the judges give him three yeses and he’s on his way to Hollywood!
When it’s all over, Aranda remains very calm and humble… but it’s clear he’s excited!
Though the show keeps going, performances like this one are what keeps it so fresh.
While American Idol often showcases talented singers who haven’t fully come into their voices, Aranda clearly has his own execution and delivery that are unique and amazing. Though his ultimate fate on the show has not yet been determined, we’re definitely expecting great things from him.
