Many of us assume that day-to-day life in a retirement home must be pretty boring.

But while it’s certainly true that there are certain things that you’d struggle to do as a pensioner, getting older doesn’t automatically mean all the fun seeps out of your life.

One group of elderly people were keen to prove this in the best way possible: by producing a hilarious lip-sync video.

The staff and residents at three retirement villages – Bert Sutcliffe Village, Logan Campbell Village and Murray Halberg Village – in Auckland, New Zealand, recreated the music video “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake.

The video performance will leave you in fits of laughter, but it’s pretty inspiring, too, proving that you’re never “too old” to have a laugh.

First off, if you haven’t seen the original “Can’t Stop The Feeling” music video, that’s the place to start.

Part of the comedy of the retirees’ video recreation is that it mimics the original down to every last detail.

The level of work that must have gone into making sure every single thing was the same, from clothing to props, is immense.

As the video begins, we see “Justin Timberlake” enjoying a coffee and a fruit pie.

The dashing older man – who makes a fantastic Timberlake impersonator, we must say – glances up, and the camera shifts to a “waitress”, who’s dancing along to the music.

“Justin Timberlake” then begins to lip-sync along with the verses we’re all so familiar with. The song alone puts a big smile on your face, but this is on another level.

One viewer commented:

“I had a big grin on my face from beginning to end – I hope I get to have this much fun when I’m you’re age! Well done everyone xx”

As the camera switches from one scene to the next, we’re treated to shots of residents and staff having a boogie.

From the laundromat to a coffee shop, there’s always an excuse for the video’s participants to break into a dance!

Parts of the video are particularly clever, like the “scooter wash” scene, which comedically replaces the “car wash” in the original video.

“Can’t Stop The Feeling”, which was released in May 2016, is the ultimate summer tune.

It’s the perfect feel-good hit to dance along to – and the staff and residents who worked together on this music video recreation must have had a blast.

When the chorus kicks in, the performers kick it up a notch. Staff in the laundromat wave towels over their heads, an elderly man at the “scooter wash” plays air guitar, and in the dining area, residents have got up to dance along with the “waitress”.

It’s a video that makes you want to get up and dance, too – and why not?

Dancing isn’t just a powerful tool to bring communities together. Research shows that it’s also good for the mind and the body.

Several studies have even linked dancing with a decreased risk of disability and dementia.

Retirement can seem like a daunting thing – and many consider it “the end of life”.

This “Can’t Stop The Feeling” reenactment is proof, however, that retirement living can be a bundle of laughs. In fact, it paints the picture of retirement as one long vacation, which is a brilliant optimistic approach to this stage of life.
