Talent comes in many shapes and sizes and ages.
On The Voice, we often see people in their 20s and 30s pursuing their dreams. But sometimes, there are teenagers, and they can be the most entertaining the ones with the best voices.
When Preston C. Howell auditioned for the show, the coaches didn’t realize he was only 14 years old.
But once all of the coaches turned their chairs, they could tell that Preston is young. But it wasn’t until they talked to him that they realized just how young he is.
Preston chose the perfect song to woo the judges. He sang “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by the Mamas and Papas and gave it a soulful rendition that really made it his own.
The 14-year-old got a coveted four-chair turn during his audition.
After he finished singing, and his family emotionally celebrated the four-chair turn backstage, the coaches got a chance to talk to Preston.
As with everyone who auditions, the coaches asked him how old he was and where he is from. Once Preston told Gwen Stefani that is only 14, she actually screamed a little and said:
“When I turned around, you didn’t look like your voice was coming out of your body. How your 14 and your voice sounds like that. My son is 13 and his voice is cracking and all over the place.”
Since Preston chose a song that isn’t very popular with people his age, the coaches wanted to know what made him choose that song. Unlike most teens who are into pop artists of today, Preston enjoys jazz music.
Gwen told him that all of the coaches would die to have him on their team. But the one who really sold him was John Legend.
“Most of the time, this show is about fireworks and big riffs and big runs. But you said, I’m gonna do it standard. And I’m just going to sound beautiful doing it. The whole idea you can come out here, at your age, and do a song that most people wouldn’t have the cajones to do, is such an audacious undertaking.
A lot of people know I love the kind of music that you did. I’ve performed it for my Christmas album. I just performed “Unforgettable” with The Voice winner from last season.”
Even though Gwen got up and started singing to Preston, it seemed that he felt that John was the best fit for him coach wise. Preston chose to join Team Legend!
After Preston’s performance, the jokes and comparisons to Michael Bublé came out on social media. One Facebook user wrote:
Just when Michael Buble was about to come out of his cave and rehash his Christmas tunes. This kid just may have beat him to it
Another commenter couldn’t believe how young he is. They wrote:
His voice is limitless and so rich! Amazing that at 14 his voice is not cracking. It may develop into even more amazing as he ages. He could win but there are so many great singers this season.
What did you think of Preston’s audition? We can definitely see him going far in the competition!
