Leonard Cohen wrote the beautiful song, ‘Hallelujah,’ back in 1984. His version didn’t exactly make people take notice, but it certainly ended up becoming a classic. The song became a hit when it was later recorded by John Cale and Jeff Buckley. Since then, ‘Hallelujah’ has been covered by K.D. Lang, Bono, Rufus Wainwright, Willie Nelson, and Alexandra Burke.
Now, it was Petr Spatina’s turn to cover the hauntingly beautiful classic.
Petr Spatina is a well-known street performer in Prague, Czech Republic, and he has a very special talent that always draws in the crowds. Instead of busking on the street with a guitar, piano, or accordion, Spatina uses crystal wine glasses filled with different levels of water. He plays the unique ‘water harp.’
The glass harp is also called the ‘angelic organ’ because of its gorgeous sound and warm, enveloping tone. It’s hard not to be put into a trance-like state while watching Spatina work his magic simply using his fingertips rubbing the rims of the wine glasses.
The level of water inside the glasses, as well as the size and shape of the glass, determine the tone and pitch of the sound.
Back in 2013, Spatina set up his water harp on the streets of Prague and decided to take on the classic Leonard Cohen song. Someone filmed his performance and the video immediately went viral. Since its upload, the video has been viewed almost 12 million times. In fact, the person who uploaded the incredible piece said it was “the most amazing thing” they had “ever seen.”

Another amazing performance by Spatina is the one he performed when he appeared on the Jonathan Ross show.
Right off the bat in that performance, you can tell how much speed, precision, and grace it takes to play his 33-piece glass harp so beautifully. Such an incredible thing to witness!
Spatina’s name started to be recognized after appearing and performing in a commercial for New Leagas Delaney Campaign for Skoda in the Czech Republic called Dreams and Magic
Can’t get enough Petr Spatina? How about a hypnotizing night performance with a glowing harp?
It’s hard not to be completely enthralled when watching Spatina display his craft. You might think playing wine glasses isn’t a “real” instrument, but, after seeing this fine artist? You might have to think again.
