Vanessa Carlton’s debut single “A Thousand Miles” made quite a splash when it first came out.
It was everywhere, and we all caught ourselves unexpectedly mumbling the lyrics under our breath. It became Carlton’s signature song, and her only single to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
Almost two decades later, here comes Teddy Swims, a talented young man whose vocals could make even Vanessa Carlton proud!
Teddy Swims can rightfully call himself a YouTube sensation because he’s garnered almost two million YouTube subscribers in less than a year. Through his covers of classics by Marvin Gaye, Billie Eilish and Shania Twain, Swims has caught the attention of the whole world.
He began posting on YouTube in 2019, and he’s already got millions of fans.
On his channel, you’ll find many different song covers from Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” to “The Christmas Song.”
Born Jaten Dimsdale in Atlanta, Teddy is recognizable because of his signature beard and tattoos on his face. His debut single, “Broke,” spurred reaction videos across the United States. Everyone seems to love this guy that practically came out of nowhere and blew us away with his phenomenal voice!
Swims comes from a football family, and he didn’t take singing too seriously until he discovered musical theater in 10th grade.
Swims explained that he “wanted to be a place that we all can come together, and it just is positivity and love.” One YouTube user commented that Teddy’s channel is “a place where grown men come to cry.” “I definitely wanted to be a safe space,” replied Teddy after seeing the comment.
All proceeds from Teddy’s cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” went to Black organizations, including the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Swims wanted to give something back to society because everyone around him has always been encouraging him to share his voice with the world.
We’re glad that he did, because Teddy’s got an incredible voice—and you’d never expect that “A Thousand Miles” could suit a tough guy so well until Teddy took the song and worked wonders with it!
Swims said that his biggest inspiration will always be his late grandfather, who “was the real, real deal.”
Filmed at his home studio, Teddy’s cover is a true YouTube gem with almost 10 million YouTube views.
It’s hard to decide what makes Swims’ singing so heartwarming, but all we know is that Carlton would likely approve of his soulful version of her signature track.
Teddy’s beautiful singing, the perfect arrangement, the lights in the background and the amazing camera work—everything blends together for a perfect cover we had to replay a few times.
Swims masterfully transformed the song, making it his own without losing the feeling of the original.
All of those beautiful memories rushed back, and that’s why Teddy’s rendition is so special—it is both new and familiar at the same time.
Swims has recently released his latest single “Night Off”, and you can check it out here.
You know you’ve affected people when they comment that you “gave them goosebumps” because your voice sounds like “a fine mix of soft waves and whiskey.” The audience is more than supportive, and compliments are all over the comment section on every video Teddy’s ever uploaded.
Any man who can cover “A Thousand Miles” beautifully can sing anything. Great job, Teddy!
