You don’t have to of been around during the 1980s to idolize the King of Pop. There are kids today who have an appreciation for the late artist’s music, as well as his iconic dance moves. Some young fans are so inspired in fact, that they channel their inner-Jackson and try and emulate the moves themselves.
While some kids’ talent might not go beyond their living rooms, one young performer was able to bring his Michael Jackson dance skills to the stage.
Michael Jackson is so rooted in American culture that most people are familiar with his legendary music, dance techniques, and attire.
The boy in the video has obviously grown up with the King of Pop in his household. After he’s announced as the next performer – he struts onto the stage wearing a black suit, single glove and carrying a hat. His outfit even includes details like loafers and visible socks. Yep, it’s a mini-Jackson alright!
It’s a “hip hop solo” set to “Billie Jean,” which appeared on Jackson’s best-selling 1982 album, Thriller.
Once the track fills the auditorium the dancer starts releasing his moves. By no surprise, the crowd can’t help but cheer seeing his impersonation of the artist.
Moments in, he tosses his hat, fixes his hair, then sticks the imaginary comb back into his pocket. He’s ready to rock!
Get ready, because this kid is smooth.
Michael Jackson had a dance style that was hypnotic to watch. Apparently, the boy did his homework on the artist’s signature moves and imitates his spin, kick, toe stand, and tons of fancy footwork. He appears robotic at times, a technique that Jackson was a master of (who can forget the “Smooth Criminal” video?).
At about 1 minute and 22 seconds in, the boy busts out a version of Jackson’s Moonwalk.
The world went crazy the first time Michael Jackson did the Moonwalk on stage.
According to Biography, viewers first witnessed Jackson performing this signature move during a live performance of “Billie Jean.” It took place during NBC’s 1983 TV special, Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever. During the performance, Jackson wore his black sparkly suit, fedora, and glove (sound familiar?) – performing a routine that’s still iconic today and seems to be what the boy is mirroring.
Several minutes into his act, Jackson gave everyone a quick glimpse of the step that he’d been practicing. Interestingly, it’s a move that was already present in street dancing, but Jackson is the one who popularized it on a much grander scale.
Whether you’re a fan of Jackson or not – there’s no denying that this kid is a pretty slick dancer and great at impersonating him. Surely, it took a lot of practice to get down this “Billie Jean” routine!
The room is full of energy and he has the crowd cheering at different points during his performance. Although it doesn’t show the audience members, it wouldn’t be surprising if some were dancing in their seats. Really, it’s just that contagious.
Towards the end, there’s a sudden switch of music and he finishes with a quick tease of “Smooth Criminal.” Come on, can’t we get an encore?
It’s not certain whether the boy won any prizes for his “Billie Jean” act. However, his performance has gathered more than 12 million views, which has got to be a rewarding feeling!
