“Bohemian Rhapsody” is just one of those songs that you can’t help but sing along to when you hear it. There’s so much going on that you’re bound to remember at least one part of the song, whether it’s the solo at the beginning or the “Galileo, GALILEO” back-and-forth.
For a song about murder and then selling one’s soul to the devil, it’s a pretty fun sing-a-long!
School tradition
Ollerup Efterskole is a boarding school in Vester Skerninge, Denmark that specializes in the performing arts. And their chorus is just one of the now-thousands of groups that have covered the iconic Queen song. But they look like they have a lot of fun with it!
“This song is so legendary that, I wouldn’t even be surprised if aliens were jamming to it too,” joked a commenter.
But collecting over 3.4 million views in the 3 years since it was posted means it’s probably pretty special too, right?
If we’re translating the Danish subtitles correctly (and it’s an exceptionally hard language!), these are former students who have returned to the school (perhaps mixed with some current ones) and are performing a song that undoubtedly everyone learns as they pass through.
They’re also in the school’s new concert hall, which can at last hold all the alumni for one big production.
Clearly, it’s got great acoustics and the performance is all just for fun as they recall the days they learned this arrangement, perhaps from the same choral instructor.
Can you do the fandango?
Before we go any further, can we just acknowledge that no matter how many groups, young and old, have performed the song, it’s HARD!
Freddie Mercury originally imagined the story he was telling would stretch across three different songs. But then he had an epiphany about putting them all together.
Still, being able to perform each section of this musical trilogy – with each part being very distinct – is a challenge both for musical arrangers as well as the performers (who have to cover A LOT of vocal range).
There’s a reason Freddie Mercury – who wrote the song in 1975 for the band’s album A Night At The Opera – is such a legend. He had it all.
A Danish cover
In this case, there are no soloists, but that doesn’t make it any less haunting.
The entire chorus begins with the reflection of the murderer. Then, the men’s tenor section covers the initial confession that is normally a solo: “Mama, just killed a man…”
The moment of truth
After we get over the initial fun of remembering the song and singing along, most of us wait in anticipation of one particular moment to see what performers are going to do.
You know the part.
Bohemian Rhapsody has topped the charts four different times over the last 45 years – when it was released, then upon Freddie Mercury’s passing, again when it made a special appearance in the 1992 film Wayne’s World, and finally when the award-winning biopic on Mercury was released in 2018.
So will they commence with the head-banging?
You betcha!
Now THAT will get the blood flowing!
It’s pretty clear that the alums have great memories of performing this song back when they were in school.
As for their conductor – he seems pretty delighted to see his former students remember what he taught them (and get through one exhausting round of conducting the epic song!).
