Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd are a couple of big names in the world of country music. They also were friends for a very long time.

While Rogers and Judd each had their own successful singing career, they gave fans quite the “gift” when they combined for a soul-stirring version of a Christmas song. It was, in fact, for Roger’s 1996 holiday album titled The Gift.

So, what song did they sing?

With how much talent both artists possessed (R.I.P. Rogers), they could have sung the phone book together and it would have been a masterpiece! But for the album, they collaborated on a rendition of the powerful tune, “Mary, Did You Know?”

“Mary, Did You Know?” has become a Christmas favorite in many households.

Singer Mark Lowry began writing the words of “Mary, Did You Know?” in 1984 after his pastor requested he pen a Christmas-themed musical. One of the pieces was a monologue about Mary.

Lowry told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:

“I wanted to ask her what it was like to raise God. We read that the word became flesh, and it was just a very powerful thought, to look at those little hands of Jesus that had scooped out oceans, land and rivers.”

Lowry’s written piece contained thoughtful questions for Mary regarding her son Jesus. Then in 1991, songwriter Buddy Greene added the music per Lowry’s request, transforming it into the song we know today.

“Mary, Did You Know?” has been covered by many different artists since its birth.

Christian singer, Michael English, was the first to record the song. Over the years, Pentatonix, Clay Aiken, Natalie Cole, and Carrie Underwood, have all released their own renditions of “Mary, Did You Know?”

A popular version, of course, came from country singers Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd, which appeared on The Gift. But even more than just listening to them sing together – watching the duo in action is a special treat on its own!

One YouTube video features Rogers and Judd performing “Mary, Did You Know?” inside a gazebo.

Both super-star artists are dressed in their winter coats facing each other while they sing the moving lyrics. Angel statues blowing horns can be seen just outside of the gazebo, and there’s what appears to be a “crib-like” piece between the duo.

The setting just adds to what really is a heavenly performance.

Rogers (aka “The Gambler”) begins the song, and it’s soon clear that his voice pairs with it just perfectly.

Judd too seems made for “Mary, Did You Know?” with her stunning vocals.

She looks up to the heavens at points while singing the lyrics, which are beautiful enough to fill someone’s heart.
