Kelly Clarkson is known for her amazing covers, but there was something extra chilling when she performed, “Purple Rain” during a concert in St. Paul.

It’s a song you’ve likely heard many times before, sung by the legendary artist Prince. Kelly’s rendition, however, pays beautiful tribute to the tune we’ve been enjoying since it was released back in the ’80s.

Music listeners have been completely moved by the video below that was captured by a fan sitting in the audience. Soon, you’ll realize why it’s been viewed over two million times.

There’s nothing easy about taking on a classic song – especially one from an artist as respected as Prince.

Kelly too realized that she had big shoes to fill singing “Purple Rain.” Adding to the stress was the fact that her concert was taking place in Prince’s home state of Minnesota.

Even before she belted out the first note, Kelly jokingly admits to the crowd, “No pressure.”

With all eyes on her, Kelly begins crooning the opening lyrics:

“I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain…”

After just the first line the crowd breaks out into wild cheers. Even then it was apparent they’d be experiencing a special performance from the artist.

“Purple Rain” is considered to be a “pop-ballad” consisting of a variety of music genres like gospel, rock, and R&B. Interestingly enough, it was originally intended to be a country track done with Stevie Nicks.

The meaning of the song carries as much power as its sound. According to Smooth Radio, Prince once explained:

“When there’s blood in the sky – red and blue = purple… purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain.”

Get ready for a spine-tingling version of “Purple Rain” from powerhouse Kelly Clarkson.

It’s hard to believe that Kelly’s been wowing audiences since 2002 – the year she became the very first winner of American Idol. Although she’s worn many hats over the years her incredible voice is her signature gift.

While performing Prince’s classic Kelly does not disappoint. Her vocals are intense enough to spread goosebumps even through the computer screen. You can actually feel her passion when she sings:

“Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you walkin’ in the purple rain”

It’s a rendition that’s not just incredible to listen to – Kelly’s stage presence brings it to a whole other level. She also is wearing a dress that has a bit of ‘purple sparkle’ that captures your eye.
