World of Dance is back for season 2!
In 2017, the reality dance competition took the world by storm and became one of the most popular TV shows of the summer.
It is hosted by Jenna Dewan, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and the judges are Grammy-winning singer Ne-Yo, Emmy winning choreographer and six-time Dancing with the Stars winner Derek Hough, and J.Lo herself. The show was actually inspired by J.Lo’s roots, as she first rocketed to fame as a dancer on In Living Color.
On World of Dance, dancers compete either as solo acts, duos, or part of a group to win the ultimate prize – $1 million.
People in groups of 1 to 4 over the age of 18 compete in the Upper division, while teams of 4 or more over the age of 18 compete in the Team division, all dancers under the age of 18 previously competed in Junior, but now there are two Junior divisions: Junior for groups of 1 to 4, and Junior Team for groups over 4 members.
The first episode of the season opened with the Qualifiers round and the competition was fierce.
One of the standout performers from the first episode was the duo Karen y Ricardo, from Santiago, Chile.
This real-life couple has danced the streets of Chile for six years and fought their way to the top. They are the only couple in the world to win nine world titles, and Karen’s spectacular ability to do more than 36 spins is what makes this duo stand out from the rest.
Their salsa was fast, clean, and full of fancy footwork and crazy flips and twists. When they finished, Derek Hough actually jumped onto the judges’ table. The couple earned the first near-perfect score of the season.
After Karen y Ricardo performed, World of Dance shared the video on their Facebook page and it is one of the most viewed videos they have. It has 1.6 million views, 38,000 likes, 42,000 shares, and over 2,000 comments.
One Facebook user wrote that they were screaming in their house when they saw this performance:
Omg! I am hoarse. Crazy doggone talent. Daaaang! Wow! I was on my feet, screaming in my house like I was in the audience.
Another commenter felt that World of Dance had never seen dancers like Karen y Ricardo:
