If you spend much time watching reality television shows, after a while you start to think you’ve seen it all.
Though shows like American Idol started our craze for these kind of competitions, the phenomenon has continued through other shows. While The Voice offers a wacky alternative for those who want an all-singing show, there are shows out there that are even more diverse and wild.
Most specifically, it doesn’t much stranger than America’s Got Talent. On that show, singers compete along with dancers, magicians, mimes and whoever else to get the world’s attention.
And just when you think you’ve seen it all, someone comes along to shake things up.
That was definitely the case for one act on the show’s 2019 season.
As the clip begins, all the judges are waiting for the next performer to emerge. As he comes out, he introduces as Patrizio Ratto and he explains that he’s an Italian pianist.
After a few words, he says to everyone that he’ll be playing some classical music for them. At this, judge Simon Cowell rolls his eyes—clearly, he’s seen it before and isn’t all that interested.
Regardless, the rest of the judges clear the way for him to perform and he sits down on the piano bench.
Right as he sits down, he plays just a couple notes to test the piano.
After that, he starts playing “Für Elise” by Beethoven. Though his touch on the piano is great and he sounds good, it’s clear the judges aren’t particularly interested in hearing this song performed yet again. Regardless, he continues on as the audience members yawn… but then something happens. All of a sudden, there’s a kink in the music and Ratto starts miming some robotic movements.
Before long, he’s spasming all over the place and kicking the piano bench over behind him.
By this point, everybody in the room realizes that this pianist is definitely not who he said he was at the beginning.
Before long, the song he was playing has turned into an electronic beat and he’s breakdancing and contorting his body all over the stage.
In the middle of it all, he bends over backwards and lifts his body up and down, seeming so dangerously close to falling over. Whatever’s happening, it’s clear that he’s bringing a unique style of movement and theatricality to what would otherwise be a boring piano performance.
When it’s all over, the whole crowd and all the judges give him a standing ovation.
Finally, the judges all give him their feedback.
As they explain, the initial presentation put everyone off and made the twist its own surprise. His dancing was incredible—and his piano playing was incredible as well! By the end, everyone goes down the line and gives him all the positive feedback he deserves.
When it’s all over, he gets the four yeses he was looking for. Needless to say, performances like this one show just how important good showmanship is on shows like this one. Though both of his talents were good on their own, the combination of the two is what sent this performance over the edge.
Congratulations to Patrizio Ratto on a truly incredible job! Be sure to watch the entire thing in the link below:
