When you go to a championship sporting event, you expect to see the very best athletes of each sport, doing what they do best. You expect to see high levels of prestige and professionalism, as only the finest sportsmen and women step out into the arena and show the world what they can do.
So, given that everyone in the crowd was expecting to see the very best skaters around at the World Synchronized Skating Championships of 2014, they were more than a little surprised when a bunch of random guys in bathrobes walked out onto the ice in the middle of the opening ceremony!
Even the host seemed utterly shocked by this unexpected turn of events!
The host had just wrapped up the grand opening event, telling the crowd to come back the next day and get ready for the big tournament to finally begin, when suddenly, the robed men skated out together and started stretching by the back wall. Confused, the host skated over and said, “The show’s over! What are you doing here? Who are you?”
“We are swimmers!” responded one of the men, explaining that they were there for the “World Championship of Synchronized Swimming.”
The host said that the ice would probably be a little too hard and heavy for the guys to try swimming through, but the ‘swimmers’ said that it would be fine, so the host decided to let them show off what they could do! The audience laughed and cheered with anticipation as the robes came off and the men got ready to swim!
Looking ready for a day at the pool, the man stood all in a line in their goggles and swimsuits, suddenly diving right out onto the ice!
They then began to paddle along on their backs, kicking their legs and pushing themselves across the rink, just as though they were swimming.
Next, the man lay on their backs as beautiful music began to play, performing their synchronized swimming routine, waving their arms and kicking their legs.
They looked a little amateurish at the start, but as the show goes on, we start to see just how talented they are!
Next, the men finally get to their feet and start to skate for real!
The audience goes wild as Walk This Way by Run-DMC starts to play and the guys toss their swimming caps to the side.
Moments later, they’re skating in perfect synchronization around the arena, showing off the full extent of their abilities with amazing spins and twirls and acrobatic moves.
At one moment, they all line up and watch as one member of the group pulls off some utterly crazy moves to Gangnam Style, including a flying spin that leaves the audience breathless!
But the men aren’t finished entertaining the audience there!
Moments later, the guys line up in the center of the rink and strip off before performing a ‘too hot for TV’ version of the Gangnam Style dance.
The guys do a simply amazing job, putting a perfect final flourish on the opening ceremony and getting everyone hyped up for the skating to come in the subsequent days.
