Grace VanderWaal was a contestant on the 11th season of America’s Got Talent. She was only 12 years old when she won while singing her own original songs. She also played the ukulele and the saxophone. During her audition on the show, she sang an original song called “I Don’t Know My Name,” which was about self-identity. The judges loved it, and Howie Mandell hit the Golden Buzzer that allowed her to skip to the live quarterfinal round. Simon Cowell called her the next Taylor Swift.
In the quarterfinals, she sang another original song that she had written for her sister.
It was called “Beautiful Thing.” The judges gave her rave reviews, and it became clear that she was a judge and fan favorite on the show. The fact that she was singing original songs made it all the better. Everyone was excited to see what else she had to offer.
In the semifinals, she sang a song called “Light the Sky.”
Her performance received a lot of praise, and she was voted on to the next round by the judges. It seemed she was a sure pick for as the winner. She was sent on to the finals.
For the final round, she sang the song “Clay,” which she had written about bullies. She also performed her song “I Don’t Know My Name” again. Stevie Nicks also performed and compared her own style to Vanderwaal’s. At the end of the show, Grace was announced as the winner. It made her the second female winner and the second child act winner in the show’s history.
After the show, Grace used her winnings to make a donation to charity and to buy two treehouses, built by the team from “Treehouse Masters,” for herself and her sister.
She also made several appearances on shows like “Ellen” and the “Tonight Show.” She even headlined four sold-out concerts in the PH Showroom at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
Grace signed a recording deal with Columbia Records in September 2016 and released her debut album, “Perfectly Imperfect,” a few months later.

Grace’s family said that she started making up songs when she as just 3 years old. She always showed an interest in music and had the ability to watch a movie, understand what the characters were feeling, and write songs about it. She used the money she received for her birthday to buy her first ukulele and learned to play it by watching videos on YouTube.
Once she found out she could play and sing, she was unstoppable, and her family knew it was time to let her use her talents for something bigger.
She started performing at open mic nights and small venues near her home. She also started studying music theory. When it came time to audition for “AGT,” she knew it was a great opportunity and was optimistic, but she didn’t expect to win.
After winning the show, she was homeschooled for a year while in the seventh grade and then returned to public school for eighth grade.
