Don’t you just love when famous performers bring fans onstage? Even better, is when they invite an unsuspecting fan onstage to take part in the performance. Well, that’s not always true I guess. Sometimes they blow you away with their vocal talent, other times…you just want them to go back to their seats.
Country star Kieth Urban however, seems to pick them well!
On one particular night in Gettysburg PA, one lucky (and actually talented!) girl got to show off on stage.
Elly Cooke’s night was made when she attended Urban’s Ripcord tour. As far as she knew, she was in for a night of fun and music by one of her favorite artists. What she got though, was a far more memorable experience. Ellie wanted to be a singer/songwriter, and on that fateful night, her wish came true.
When Keith invited Elly and her mom Becky onto stage, he didn’t really know what he was getting.
Was this bright-eyed and bushy-tailed girl going to bring talent onto his stage, or was he going to live to regret taking a chance on a stranger? Regardless, Keith proved himself to be a real charmer. When Elly’s mom Becky hops on stage, he can’t help but get a little flirty, saying “You’re her mother? What were you like 15 when you had her, that’s crazy!” Excuse me sir, there are children present! Hers!
Keith asks Elly a bit about herself and discovers her singing aspirations.
Having graduated the year prior, Elly says that she wants to be doing what Urban himself has had such success with. Let’s hope this goes well! You can see that although she does have more on-stage confidence than most…she is feeling some nerves. Fair enough! If that were me, I’d be a nervous wreck, so she’s actually doing quite well!
And an awkward moment or two later
When she first stepped up, she goes in for a hug, not realising that Keith is actually just extending a microphone. Again, this girl is doing great on stage. Don’t believe me? Just wait for her to begin singing!
When Elly begins singing, she brings the heat!
They’re performing Keith’s song “Somebody Like You”, an upbeat love song that, as it turns out, Elly can sing the heck out of! In a moment, Elly hits that microphone with a ton of talent, and just like that in front of 8,000 people filling The Giant Center, a star is born.
And it seems like Keith likes it!
In his head he may have been praying that this stranger will have what it takes to sing this song to the crowd. So pleased, he must have been when she began to sing with such a wonderful voice, and with admirable stage-presence. Keith looks impressed!
And when they sing together, it really steps up a notch!
Just like in A Star is Born, you can see Elly’s career flashing in font of her a path, now that much clearer. She’ll have this memory with her forever; the time she sang a duet with Keith Urban. Or as the Australian/Kiwi would say: with Keith-Bloody-Urban!
Then in the end, Elly gets her hug!
Good things come to those who wait, and they also come to those who absolutely tear it up on stage. I’m sure you’ll agree that Elly fits into the latter category.
And now, a few years later, Elly is continuing her dream.
After singing alongside one of the world’s most famous country singers in front of 8,000 people (not to mention the at-home viewers like us), I’m sure it feels like you can do anything. Elly has continued to pursue her dream of making music.
