When it comes time for prom, teenagers can get a bit nervous.
Some of them are nervous about asking someone to prom; others are wondering if anyone will ask them. Once they find someone to go to prom with, they have to find the right flowers, outfits, photographers … it’s a lot of planning and stress.
Katie Kelzenberg is a senior at Stillwater Area High School in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota.
While her friends were all waiting for boys to come up with fun and creative ways to ask them to prom, Katie was coming up with a way to ask her own crush. You won’t find Katie’s crush walking the halls of her high school. You are more likely to find him on the big screen. Katie’s crush is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the professional wrestler turned actor.
Katie has been crushing on “The Rock” for a while, and who can blame her?
She decided that if she was going to ask a celebrity to prom, she had better go out of her way to make it big. She decided to dress up like Johnson and record her prom proposal.
In the video, Katie holds a sign up and then says, “Will you go to prom with me?”
Of course, Katie wasn’t really expecting Johnson to accept her invitation or even reply to her, but she got a big surprise in class a few days later.
Katie was just sitting in class with her friends waiting on the morning announcements when all of a sudden, she heard a familiar voice.
She couldn’t believe was she was hearing. It was Johnson making her school’s morning announcements. He said:
“You’re probably thinking, ‘What is “The Rock” doing on our intercom system?’ Well, I’m sending a message to a very special young lady, and her name is Miss Katie Kelzenberg. Now, Katie, I’m sure that you are so embarrassed right now, but I just had to let you know I appreciate how cool and awesome you are for inviting me to your prom.”
Katie was in disbelief.
Was her celebrity crush really talking to her? Johnson was sad to have to turn down the proposal, but he explained that it is because he is too busy filming a movie and simply can’t get away. But he did have a surprise for Katie and her friends. He continued:
“Since we’re now best friends and I have so much love for you because you’re so awesome, as a very special gift, I have rented out a theater tomorrow.”
So, Katie and her friends got to enjoy a movie and all the popcorn, candy, and drinks they wanted, while Johnson paid for it.
Katie was in seventh heaven. This was way more than she expected or hoped for. Although she was a little sad that Johnson couldn’t be her prom date, she was thrilled that he took time out of his busy life to talk to her and send her and her friends to a movie.
He wasn’t done, though. He was so impressed by how brave Katie was to ask him to prom that he posted a video on his Facebook page for her. In the video, he says:
“You made my gym wall, right there. When you make the gym wall, you know you’re special, and you’re cool. I love you for being an awesome fan.”
While Katie may not have got the answer she had hoped for, she got more than she expected, and she is happy with how things turned out.
She can’t get over the fact that Johnson called her his best friend or said her name on the intercom in front of the entire school. Whoever her prom date is sure has a tough act to follow.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson surprises SAHS student
Stillwater Area High School senior Katie Kelzenberg had quite the surprise this morning. She received a special message from actor Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Last week, Katie asked Johnson to prom on Twitter. Today he sent a special message via the morning announcements at school. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to accept her invite because he is shooting a movie in Hawaii. Instead, he rented out an entire theater for Katie and her friends, along with students from SAHS, to watch his latest movie Rampage. #PonyPride
