When it comes to reality competition shows, finding a way to stand out from the crowd is so important.
Let’s face it: there are tons of these kinds of shows on television and all of them have been on the air for something like 10 seasons each.
By this point, everybody in the audience has seen it all, and so have the judges. Still, there are plenty of talented people in America who haven’t had a chance to share their talents on these shows yet—even if it’s getting harder and harder to do so.
Fortunately, people are creative enough to keep finding new ways.
The performance we’re talking about happened in 2014 on Britain’s Got Talent.
Like any other audition, it began with a man walking out on stage to introduce himself to the judges. As he explains, his name is Darcy Oake and he’s 26 years old.
Although many of the performers on the Got Talent shows are singers or dancers, Oake explains that he has a different act. “When I was a kid, I had hopes and dreams of becoming a doctor,” he says. “But my parents insisted that I become a magician.”
Obviously he was joking, but what a great opening line!
Still, doing a magic act on a show like this can be risky—after all, the viewers are pretty sophisticated to magic tricks at this point.
Still, as Oake explains, he’s been interested in magic since he was a little kid and made it his life’s passion. Without much further ado, the judges clear the way for Oake to perform.
To begin, he lights a match off of his jacket while holding a white scrap of paper in his other hand. A moment later, he brings the match over to the scrap and it lights in a huge ball of fire—and a white dove emerges from it out of nowhere!
Although plenty of magicians work with birds and fire, few do it so smoothly and in plain sight!
As the performance goes on, things only get more complicated.
Before the audience can wrap their head around the first bird, he seems to tear it in half… and now there are two birds. At this point, the audience loses their mind.
Putting the first couple birds away in a cage, he creates another bird bird out of thin air… and another. After that, one of the birds even seems to lay an egg in his hand. A moment later, he cracks the egg open and there’s another bird!
After that, he produces another little bird cage out of fire.
Perhaps most incredible of all is that he splits the cage in half… and then there are two birds in cages!
For the grand finale, he turns the whole bird cage into a woman in a dress. Needless to say, the judges and the crowd give him a huge round of applause when it’s all over!
As this performance shows, it ultimately doesn’t matter too much what your passion or talent is. If you give it your all and you have a unique approach to it that nobody can replicate, you can go as far as you want to go.
