If you traveled the entire world, you would come across so many different forms of dance.
In America, we have more contemporary hip-hop dancing as well as more interpretive modern dance or older swing dancing. If you went to South America, you would find the tango, salsa, bachata, merengue and many other forms. Though the list can go on and on, each different form of dance has its own rules and customs. As it turns out, some dances are designed specifically for men and some for women.
Though you can always break some of those rules.
At least, that’s what happened on one episode of America’s Got Talent on the 2019 season.
The performers in question were a group of women who called themselves Revolution Queens from Argentina.
As they explain to the judges, they perform a traditional form of dance called malambo, a step dance from Argentina that has traditionally been performed by men. Still, these girls wanted to bring the art form to a wider audience—and they wanted to defy some expectations while they were at it.
After explaining everything, the judges cleared the way for them to perform.
A moment later, all the girls turned around and strapped on their massive drums to be used in the performance.
After that, they all start pounding on their drums and step dancing as they go! The song that’s playing in the background is an aggressive rock song and before long, all the girls are pounding their drums with sticks and moving all over the stage.
Though everybody in the audience knew that the girls would be dancing, nobody expected it to look quite like this!
Still, they’re not done yet!
After a few more moves, they set their drums down and do the rest of the performance without them.
The second half of the dance looks like a more aggressive tap dancing routine with plenty of stepping moves added in as well.
After that, they pick up some ropes and chains and the performance goes to another level! After doing a kind of jumping routine with them, the dancers put the ropes in their mouths for a grand finale! When it’s finally over, they all strike a big pose.
With that, the dance is over and the whole crowd bursts into applause!
When it’s time for the judges to give their feedback, they don’t know quite what to say.
Beyond that, all the girls are also highly emotional themselves—after all, making it onto the show was a dream come true. As they explain, they all sacrificed so much to make it on the big stage… and their story even brings the judges to tears. After some more positive feedback, the judges give them four yeses to continue!
Needless to say, the girls achieved everything they intended to do.
Though it goes without saying, their story and their performance together were so inspiring.
As anyone who watches these shows knows, it usually takes more than just raw talent to make it far on these shows. Instead, it takes a combination of talent, a surprise factor and a story that can connect with the audience. At the end of the show, it’s clear this group had all three.
