Though there have been plenty of memorable singers over the years, few are as iconic as Edith Piaf.
For those who don’t know, Piaf was a French singer-songwriter, cabaret performer and film actress who was born in 1915.
Some of her most famous songs were “La Vie En Rose” and “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.” Although she has plenty of songs and has been commemorated by plenty of other performers as well, she rose to prominence as a result of a biopic made about her life in 2007 as well.
As a result of her renewed cultural relevance, other artists have taken to interpreting her work.
One of those artists includes Daniela Andrade, a singer-songwriter and YouTuber.
Though Andrade is not a household name as of yet, she has been working hard to build up and online presence and has released all kinds of videos and performances to make that happen.
While Andrade also makes her own music, many of her songs are covers of other major artists’ work, with a range spanning from the early 20th century to today.
Still, her most popular video of all time on YouTube is actually a cover of Piaf’s signature song.
The song in question is “La Vie En Rose,” the same song used for the title of her 2007 biopic.
As the video begins, Andrade can be seen singing in front of a microphone with her acoustic guitar in hand. Though it’s not identical to the original, Andrade takes the key melodic parts and reinterprets them from her own perspective.
The lyrics to the original are in French, but Andrade has substituted her own lyrics—though they are equally beautiful!
Perhaps best of all is that Andrade has kept a snippet of the original French to keep the same spirit of the song.
As the performance continues, Andrade’s voice only gets more and more beautiful—it’s definitely an amazing tribute to Piaf!
When it’s finally over, Andrade sings the last few notes and strums a last chord on her guitar. Since the video was originally posted, it has earned nearly 50 million views on YouTube and has been shared all over the internet!
After watching it, it’s clear to see why—Andrade is clearly incredibly talented and has a beautiful voice all her own. Although the song she’s covering is an instantly recognizable and iconic one, she still finds a way to make it all her own.
But she also has other amazing performances on her channel.
For more evidence of her creativity and talent, it’s worth watching some of her other songs as well.
In particular, her performance of Radiohead’s “Creep” is also so unique and amazing. While the original has a spooky, ethereal quality, Andrade’s version brings a new warmth and tonality to it. Although both versions are great, her’s is definitely original:
