Stop whatever it is you’re doing. Hold it right there.
Now turn the volume up, watch and listen. You may know the song but you’ve never heard it done this way. This is Claire Crosby and at the age of seven is already showing promising signs of being a future star.
She’s your typical kid. Her soft, adorable face and curly blonde hair perfectly matching the colorful stuffed toys behind her. But don’t be fooled. Here she is with “To make you feel my love“. A song written by Bob Dylan yet commonly associated with the singing sensation, Adele.
The lyrics go like this.
“When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love”
That’s the first part. And if you don’t know it, the title and the words are pretty self explanatory. It’s someone who is yearning to be with that one special person. So much so that he or she would go to great lengths just to let them feel that love. Perhaps the reason it is more commonly known to be Adele’s song is that she sings it with such raw emotion. Her version is perfect for the lonely and the brokenhearted.
Claire’s rendition is different.
The camera is ready but Claire isn’t. She says “hang on” and lets out a sneeze and a silly smile. Her innocence is so charming that it works for the camera, adding a bit of light comedy to her presentation.
She asks someone if she can start and as soon as she gets the green light, this lovely little lady introduces herself to her viewers with surprising confidence and grace. She’s got the makings of a superstar.
What a cute ukulele!
The size is just about right for her and the color is just the right hue for this budding singer. And when she does start singing, it’s clear that this isn’t some ordinary kid. What a voice!
It’s a fairly slow paced song. And songs like this one reveal the quality of the singer’s voice. It requires pinpoint precision per note sung along with incredible control and a tone that matches the mood of the lyrics. And while Bob and Adele’s are very much heartbreaking to listen to, Claire’s is delightfully done.
She’s never experienced the pains of love.
Hence her adorable face scrunching up when she delivers the words with each strum of her guitar. It’s hard to believe a seven year old has this much charm on camera because of her talent.
And as she carries on with the verses, she adds just the right amount of power to her voice emphasizing the part that goes,
“When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
Oh, I hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love”
Adele, you should be listening.
Claire closes her eyes at the right moments, rocks her head back and swings it from side to side at all the right moments of the song. She also knows when to strum her instrument with a bit of style as needed. She’s good.
It’s a ballad but Claire is rock and roll.
And by that, I mean her body language. She sways and rocks back and forth to the melody and she displays her emotions with each line delivered. Talk about taking a song and turning it into something special!
Claire ends it with a cheerful message to her viewers, thanking them for watching her performance. She may have said goodbye but you’ll definitely be seeing more of Claire Crosby.
