How has American Idol already narrowed things down to the Top 5? It feels like the finale is just days away at this point!
For the most recent episode of the show, contestants had to sing a song from the year they were born and they had to also perform a Prince song.
Catie Turner has been keeping things interesting on American Idol since her very first episode. This week was no different!
Catie was born in 2000 (gosh, when did I get so old), so she picked a pretty classic song from that year that just about everyone on the planet has heard. She chose Britney Spears‘s smash hit “Oops!… I Did It Again.”
At the beginning of her segment of the show, Catie was surprised by meeting Nick Jonas. She’s a huge fan of Nick and has been since she was 5 years old.
The 18-year-old Pennsylvania native sang the Britney song in a unique way. It doesn’t sound like Britney, but that is the point. She made it her own, but still managed to make it work completely and she had the audience on their feet.
After the performance, Catie got the praise she needed from the judges.
Katy Perry was quick to jump in with her commentary.
“Can I just say that was one of the most interesting versions I’ve ever heard of that song. It sounded like you were Amy Winehouse, singing a Britney Spears song.
I think the combination of your voice and your artistry and your presentation and your personality is so different and unique and unlike anyone else.”
Luke Bryan pleaded with Catie to accept her star power and embrace her true talent because the judges all felt that she was incredible.
Luke’s comments made it easy for Lionel Richie to chime in and agree. The music legend said:
“I’m going to echo that exactly. For some weird reason, you have it in your head that you’re not quite all the way there. When I am telling you, that you a bring a new style, your style. I want you to understand is own it. Own it.
Because what you did with that song and made it all yours. To take a Britney Spears song and turn it into Catie, I love it, I love it.”
Sadly, Catie Turner did not make it to the Top 5 on American Idol, after performing “Oops!… I Did It Again” by Britney Spears flawlessly.
To try and snag that top spot, Catie had to sing another song, and she chose the song “Manic Monday” by The Bangles (which is a Prince composition), but she managed to mix up the beginning lyrics. That mixup seems to have cost her her spot in the competition! It is obvious the judges loved Catie, but maybe America didn’t as much.
Britney Spears needs to see this performance ASAP and team up with Catie Turner!
