American Idol is no stranger to incredible stories from its many singers.
They come from all walks of life, sharing unbelievable backgrounds from the impressive to the heartbreaking.
Cam Amen is a young man who comes from a past that could have easily broken anyone.
But not this guy’s spirit.
Judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan carried out the usual pre-audition chat and interview and Amen soon shared his upbringing.
“It was a bit rough going in and out of foster care,” he revealed before his American Idol audition.
“I just remember being taken out of my classroom by police officers. I’m holding my brother. We didn’t know was going on. We were crying waiting for Mom.
She never came. We were in foster care a long time. I did leave at 18 and took in my brother and sister. I knew I had to raise them right and get them through high school.”
Now put yourself in his position and just imagine how terrifying that must have been.
Cam had to raise his siblings after they were put into foster care.
The Indianapolis native now living in Nebraska had a hard life growing up but he didn’t let those circumstances stop him or his siblings.
And now that his brother is 21 and his sister is 20, Cam is ready to chase his own dreams, and it was evident with his soul stirring audition.
He approached the audition stage looking very nervous but sharing his story seemed to work out for him.
Cam’s song of choice was Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, and he delivered it with so much emotion.
It’s one of those jaw dropping and eye opening auditions viewers have put on repeat.
Hallelujah indeed!
Right after his audition, Lionel embraced the singer saying, “Welcome home. You’ve been through a lot, but the rest of your life is waiting on you.”
Luke Bryan admitted, “I can’t hardly breathe. This is our sixth year here and your style is so beautifully unique.
I don’t have anybody that I’ve seen in this chair to compare you to. Every time I wanted you to do something amazing you did it. It was just incredible.”
“It sounds like you never got a shot,” Katy Perry told Cam. “It sounds like you had to sacrifice. You don’t need to hold on to it anymore, just let it come out.”
Lionel added, “For whatever reason, divine guidance brought you to us. And we’re going to have one heck of a ride.”
Ericka, Cam’s girlfriend, was by his side throughout his audition and she was about to witness an amazing moment.
Richie, Perry, and Bryan asked Cam to bring Ericka in before they gave their verdict.
Lucky girl!
They then explained that there were 2 tickets, namely the golden one and a platinum one.
At this point, Cam was bursting with emotions.
He got the season’s final Platinum Ticket which means he’s going on a journey he’s only dreamed of for years.
