Growing up in an adoptive family can be difficult for some people.
However, singer Brandon Elder had an adoptive mother who was amazing. When he was just an infant, his mother traded him for a car. His step-grandmother took the infant in and raised him until she passed away from cancer.
She encouraged him to sing, so when it came time for him to try out for “American Idol,” he decided to sing a song that he had written just for her.
Many people cover popular pop or even country songs. The judges and the audience typically respond well to songs they are familiar with.
Sometimes, artists get brave and decide to sing their original songs on the stage. It usually either goes really well or really bad. Elder knew he was taking a risk by singing his own song, but he also wanted to give this beautiful tribute to his late mother.
He took the stage and started playing the guitar.
It was clear that this was going to be an emotional experience for him. He fought back tears and belted out the beautiful lyrics. The judges and the audience were moved by the song and his performance, and many of them were in tears by the time he had finished.
Elder and his mother had an amazing bond.
When she became sick with cancer, he dropped out of college to take care of her. When she was in pain, he would sing and play his guitar for her to help ease her pain and take her mind off it. When she passed away, he knew that he had to write a song for her.
He didn’t know he would be performing it on “American Idol” for millions of people.
Not only did he have the courage to sing it on “Idol,” he nailed it, and every one of the judges loved it. He has released music for sale on his Facebook page and website.
A video of his performance has also been shared on YouTube, where it has gotten thousands of views and numerous comments.
The “American Idol” judges aren’t the only ones who had good things to say about this song.
Mary Benjamin commented on the video, saying:
“I cried my eyes out… Wow… Exchange your child for a car? Wow… Pretty hard on me… Wish you the best!”
Another viewer named Jenn Graham said:
“Your story was incredibly touching. Your song and voice have touched my soul. You’re my #1 choice!!”
And David Rowe commented:
“This song connected with me on so many levels! My grandma took me in when I was 7 and raised me till I was 19. She passed 8 years ago.”
While the song was clearly touching and beautiful, many people also love Elder’s voice and the way he sings.
Many of the comments on the video pointed out his unique voice.
Joe from Cali said:
“Good stuff. Raspy, soulful, melodic & from the heart Hope u go far Brother. Much love from Cali..”
And Marcos Rivera said:
“I really LIKED his voice, love his raspy tone and vibrato. Beautiful original song and lyrics, it was sung with wonderful, heartfelt emotion. ‘The love from my mother’s heart, but we are far apart,oOoo’ that did it for me.”
Brandon Elder is clearly a talented guitar player, singer, and songwriter.
There is no doubt his mother is looking down on him and crying tears of joy that he would write such a beautiful song about her. Had she not stepped in to care for him, his life would have been completely different. Writing a song for her is the least he can do. Hopefully, his music career is a success.
