As soon as she walked into the room, Caitlin Lucia made a statement!
That statement just so happened to be a little noisy. But it caught judge Katy Perry’s attention, so it was worth it.
The judges all quickly realized that the noise Caitlin was making was part of her performance – she had musical instruments attached to her feet and body!
To aid in her audition, Caitlin had worn a tambourine on her foot and brought her beautiful guitar.
When judge Katy Perry asked her who her big influences are, Caitlin was happy to reveal that Katy is the biggest one.
Apparently, Caitlin’s first musical gig was at Hotel Cafe at when she was 18 years old. The same place that Katy used to play in when she was growing up!
Katy was excited when she heard this and reminisced her days of playing at the little L.A. location:
“I was gigging there at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles from 17 to 23, just me and my guitar!”
For her American Idol audition, Caitlin sang a very bluesy version of “I Kissed A Girl” by Katy Perry. It sounded absolutely nothing like Katy’s version of the song, but incredible!
Katy was all smiles during the audition and compared to some other acts we’ve seen so far during season 16, it seemed like the judges did not want the singing to end.
After Caitlin was done, Katy had one thing to say to her:
“Well, usually I say to a contestant that is singing my song, to sing it as good as or better than me, and,” she then turned to Luke Bryan who was interrupting her to agree, “and I think she sang it better!”
The way that Katy started her commentary, Caitlin thought that she was going to be eaten alive for her performance of the pop star’s song.
While the judges loved her performance, they also felt like Caitlin has even more range than she was showing at the time of her audition.
The judges all agreed that there was more to Caitlin. Lionel Richie put it into words best.
“We can hear it. You’re just cruising along touching the top. And there’s more after the top, I know there is.”
Luke Bryan complimented Caitlin’s control over her falsetto and vibrato while she sang. All of the judges felt that Caitlin really had a great sense of her own vocal power.
Katy jokingly asked if Caitlin wanted to come sing at her next show before they all needed to vote “yes” or “no” for sending Caitlin to Hollywood. If Katy was serious, Caitlin definitely will go on tour!
Unsurprisingly (after that great audition) all three judges voted on “absolute yes” to send her on her way to stardom!
And of course, Caitlin got teary-eyed when she thanked the judges for their kind words.
