“Yesterday” was released in 1965 with Paul McCartney on acoustic guitar and vocals providing that iconic melancholic ballad.
The song was voted as the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners. “Yesterday” was also voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine the following year. The song was inducted into the 1997 Grammy Hall of Fame.
Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) says that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century.
The song’s string arrangement coupled with Paul’s signature style of singing gives it an air of sadness. Of a man remembering his happy past but questioning the present. It was all about a girl.
Fast forward to August of 2021 and the song once again comes to life, this time through a young singer named Angelina Jordan.
This world-renowned singer from Oslo, Norway has an incredible maturity and tone to her voice that belies her age. Angelina is a teenager but she can sing as her videos have received over 300 million views on YouTube and almost 1 billion views on Facebook.
Jordan’s version of McCartney’s classic features her sitting in a very orange room while the singer positions herself in a shopping cart. Why she had to sit there, I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
Anyway, her music video already has over 200,000 views considering it’s only recently posted!
Instead of an acoustic guitar, a piano accompanies Angelina’s singing, but she stays true to the song’s character, keeping it low and very sad.

Jordan is only fifteen but her legion of fans attest to her talent.
Her passion for music began when she was barely two. Angelina saw Whitney Houston on YouTube performing “I Will Always Love You”. So Whitney, and later Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington became her first major musical influences.
It’s no coincidence that she’s barefoot in the video. She always performs barefoot. This was when she befriended a young, shoeless girl. She actually wrote a book about that experience, becoming the youngest published author in Norway.

Angelina has the “fry voice” style in this one, intentionally lowering and giving her voice a scratchy sound to it. She can choose to use the technique or not, depending on the song.
