At 10 years old, Angelica Hale, a competitor in the 12th season of America’s Got Talent, has already made quite the name for herself.
The pint-sized performer has accomplished quite a lot during her short life thus far, including coming in 2nd place on her circuit of America’s Got Talent and undergoing a kidney transplant at the tender age of 4 years old. Before Hale’s audition for America’s Got Talent, her parents revealed that she was a miracle.
“When Angelica was 4 years old,” Hale’s father told America’s Got Talent, “She started coughing and having fevers. We brought her into the emergency room and that’s when we found out she had double pneumonia and her kidney stopped working.”
Things got bad enough that the chaplain was summoned to speak to Hale’s parents. In the end, Hale’s mother ended up being a match and her kidney was donated to save her little girl. Although Hale did not end up taking the season, the little girl shocked everyone with her amazing story and incredible talent. Most recently, The National Kidney Foundation (NFK) named Hale the very first NFK Kid Ambassador; she will be spreading awareness about the importance of living organ donation, reports PR Newswire. In a filmed public service announcement, Hale says, “You only need one [kidney] to be a healthy person, so you can give one away to someone who needs it. It’s a win-win.”
In honor of Hale’s strength and accomplishments, I thought it was appropriate to relive her introduction to the world.
Hale, only 9-years-old at the time, grinned at the America’s Got Talent cameras, telling the world she “la-la-la-loved to sing”. With her soft, child-like voice and spunky personality, I was immediately a fan of Hale. Still, I never would have imagined the power that would emerge from those little lungs.
Walking onstage, Hale reveals that she is inspired by Whitney Houston and wants to be a superstar. The audience and judges kind of chuckle a bit. But in the end, Hale was the one who got the last laugh.
With a thundering, mature voice Hale sings the opening lines of Andra Day’s inspirational “Rise Up”. Before she even hits the chorus, the audience explodes into cheers and applause…
And the rest, as they say, is history.
