A lot of thought and planning can go into a dance performance. Between the music selection, choreography, and costume – it’s almost as if the best performances are like a tied up, perfect package.
Crowd members at the 2020 Showbiz dance competition in Fort Lauderdale were treated to one of these types of performances. It all started when a tiny girl in turquoise and gold took the stage.
Alana Castillo is only seven-years-old, but she’s an incredibly talented dancer.
There are many adults out there who would be too frightened to get up on a stage. On the other hand, some kids seem to of been born for it. Alana is part of the latter group.
In the video, she confidently walks out and turns her back to the audience. Once a familiar tune fills the theater, Alana spins around, and that’s when it all becomes clear. Her turquoise and gold costume was definitely chosen for a reason!
The song in the background is a version of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin.
You won’t see a magic carpet in Alana’s performance – but she certainly looks like a miniature Jasmine on stage! One difference though is that her outfit has a bit more pizazz with all of the added sparkles.
The youngster’s skills for dance emerge, and she’s quite mesmerizing to watch.
Alana gracefully performs each move, which blends beautifully with the rendition of “A Whole New World.” Her facial expressions also add to the emotion of her lyrical solo – which was choreographed by Artistic Director, Patricia B. Feldt, from the Infinity Dance Studio.
Alana’s routine combines different styles of dance.
At points, she looks like a sweet ballerina on stage with her techniques. Then other times, she performs acrobatic-type moves that display her incredible flexibility. As mentioned before, she’s quite dazzling.
According to Impact Dance Adjudicators, Max Vasapoli explained lyrical dance to be:
“combining the technique of ballet and the fluidity of jazz dance. A unique trait of lyrical is the emotional connection and storytelling brought to life by the song lyrics. Movement may be choreographed to the vocal performance of a song, not just the rhythm.”
Despite only being a school-aged child, Alana appears to pour her soul into the magical dance, set to “A Whole New World”
The song (created by Alan Menken and Tim Rice) touched Disney fans’ hearts after it was featured in the 1992 film Aladdin. It even brought home an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
While you might typically think of Aladdin and Jasmine singing “A Whole New World” on their carpet journey – little Alana dancing to it is stunning too.
Alana’s breathtaking performance caught the judges’ attention at the Showbiz dance competition.
According to the video description, she won first place and was named “Miss Sapphire Showbiz.” Once you see her in action it might make sense why!
In only one day, Alana’s solo has been viewed over 5,100 times on YouTube. That’s pretty impressive for only being seven-years-old!
