Sometimes a song hits us so perfectly that we listen to it over and over again.
We don’t even notice the repetition as we lose ourselves further and further in the music.
Sometimes the love affair is instant. We hear it and we just have to have it. For some, we pay homage by dancing around the kitchen or singing loudly in the shower. For others, a musical cover does just the trick to completely immerse yourself in the tune.
Such is exactly the case for young JoJo Strogatz, a teenager with a penchant for singing.
In 2015, she dazzled the internet with an incredible performance.
Since pursuing a musical career, Strogatz goes by the stage name Canen.
Her name is inspired by Canens, a nymph that hails from Roman mythology and was the
“personification of song.”
The youthful jazz singer is from Ithaca, New York and has always loved singing.
She started singing in middle school and never stopped.
She recalls even singing or scatting whilst doing homework every night. Her dedication is clearly so pure!
Her smoky, sultry voice lends itself best to jazz compositions.
And not only that, she has taught herself to play a bevy of instruments including the ukulele, piano, guitar and violin.
Her mother, Carole Shiffman admitted in an interview to Syracuse magazine:
“She’s always been a wise, old soul. People tell me she sounds like a 1940’s cabaret singer.”
And she’s been keen on sharing her gift with the world.
On her YouTube channel, Strogatz uploads plentiful covers that enjoy easily racking up tens of thousands of views.
Commenters and fans from far and wide have left comments, gushing with adoration for her endlessly old-world voice. They admire how such a young girl can sound like she’s from an entirely different era.
Canen admits:
“I’m flattered…The views just keep coming.”
And her most popular video to date is the one from 2015. At just 12-years-old she stole the hearts of the internet with her cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.”
Since being uploaded, this simple and clean cover has earned her over nine million views and 101,000 likes. One listen and you’ll surely agree!
In the video’s description, Canen gives us her version of a musical love affair:
“When I was little, I remember hearing Ain’t No Sunshine in a movie and I immediately fell in love with the soul in this song. It was always one of those songs that I just sang around the house.. doing homework, cleaning whetever, etc.. but I never considered actually singing it. Then after I reaaally started liking to sing, my mom suggested I learn this one. The band is so unbelievable on this, from the awesome drum beat to the gorgeous cello, that I got emotional a few times at how beautiful it was. I hope you like our rendition.”
Her passion and admiration for the song brought her to make a cover, fully lined with a band including the drums, a cello, the piano and the guitar.
In the studio, Canen enjoys making music with other people. She loves sharing the experience with her peers.
“It feels like we’re all creating art together to make ourselves happy.”
