How many people went out to go see 500 Days of Summer?
The movie came out in 2009 and was a star-making vehicle for both Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Though the movie has since gone on to be something of a classic within the genre of romantic comedies, it also marked the beginning of a close friendship between Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt. To promote the movie, the two also did all kinds of promotional tours and press junkets.
But what many people didn’t see is they also did a special performance together after the movie’s release.
The video was released on Hello Giggles, a website Deschanel started aimed at women’s interests.
In the description of the video, Deschanel has a description written of her friendship with Gordon-Levitt and how she wanted to pay tribute to it. It reads:
“I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic, where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since. When we did 500 Days of Summer 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and make up trailer; we had loads of fun. I hope to do a thousand more movies with him because he’s simply the best. But in the meantime, we made a little New Year’s duet for all of you! The original by Nancy Wilson. ENJOY!”
With that, the video begins.
After a quick count-in, the two start gently strumming their instruments.
Deschanel plays the ukelele while Gordon-Levitt strums his guitar. The song they’re performing is “What Are You Doing New Years Eve?” by Nancy Wilson.
As anyone who has seen her work knows, Deschanel has a beautiful and unique voice all her own. The song they sing is so beautiful and gentle and definitely does tribute to the original.
After her verse, it’s time for Gordon-Levitt to chime in.
Although Deschanel set the bar high, Gordon-Levitt is more than up to the challenge.
He also sings beautifully as it turns out! As the song continues, both of them keep going back and forth singing verse after verse. After a little bit more back and forth, they finish up with some beautiful harmonizing and the song is over.
Although the song itself is adorable and both are talented, the real star of the video is the chemistry between the two of them.
And as it turns out, that chemistry wasn’t lost on the fans!
Although its been years since he video was posted, the commenters didn’t hesitate to make their feelings known.
The overall consensus was that Gordon-Levitt definitely had feelings for Deschanel at the time…
And other people commented that it was just too cute for them to bear.
Above all, this is a great performance for fans of either of these two performers, and a reminder at just how multi-faceted and talented they both are.
