College gymnastics videos are some of the most exciting displays of athleticism that you can see. There’s just something intensely addictive about seeing gymnasts flip, roll, spin, and twirl across a mat-covered stage. But sometimes, a gymnast stands above the crowd and really shows how far skill and talent can take the art form.
That’s why this Katelyn Obashi floor routine from December 2019 lives rent free in our thoughts.
Just imagine how hard you have to work to not only excel during a routine, but to make judges say “Ten is not enough!”
We may not know how hard Katelyn worked to get this routine down pat, but we can see the results for ourselves.
This video was recorded during a UCLA Athletics event and features Katelyn at her best. At this point, she’d been performing for UCLA since 2015. What’s remarkable about this is how she nearly had her career taken away from her after a back and shoulder injury.
But this incredibly talented woman recovered and jumped right back into pursuing her dream of becoming a world-recognized top gymnast.
The routine was a combination of amazing flips, lively dancing, and unmistakable stage presence
The routine in the video was set to a mixtape compilation of Michael Jackson songs and hip-hop hits. But the music wasn’t even close to the star of the show.
Just watch how Katelyn pulls off the execution for difficult maneuvers making it look easy. Every jump, tumble, and spin is executed with grace, panache, and an impossible-to-match sense of style.
She may be a world-star gymnast, but it’s easy to see that dancing has to be a side-hobby for the talented starlet.
But there’s one part of the performance that’s even better than the maneuvers
Fans are quick to point out that Katelyn’s energy and smile is easily the part of the performance that won their hearts.
She has a bubbly gymnastic style that audiences makes audiences smile and keeps them smiling all the way through.
Her energy is simply infectious and will leave you just as stunned as the judges were during this performance.
But Katelyn isn’t just a super star gymnast, she’s also an incredible teammate
But let’s not forget the end of the video that shows off how much support she has from her team. Her fellow gymnasts are just as excited to be on the show floor as Katelyn is and are more than happy to cheer her on. But this humble performer doesn’t let it get to her head. She is happy to stand alongside her team as well.
What a superb example of sportsmanship and cooperation.
And how did audience members and viewers take it?
The judges wished they could have given this performance higher scores than ten. But how did viewers take Katelyn’s performance?
We got our answers when UCLA Athletics posted the performance on their YouTube channel. The video received over 133,000 views with thousands of comments from across the world. These comments were more than favorable, including one person who wrote:
“Had to rewatch this multiple times. Her smile is contagious and her teammates are the best. Even Miss Val was having the time of her life watching Katelyn. That team is the type of team most of us would dream about.”
Another added,
“‘This wasn’t for you Judges, this was for ME and my TEAM.’ She stayed respectful while still having a hell of a good time on that floor. No deduction could take that away from her and she got a well deserved perfect 10.”
But our favorite comment goes to the one viewer who said:
“She seems so confident, so exuberant. Like she just feels so fresh, so full of vitality and alive…This girl is awesome.”
