Imagine being so young, yet possessing a talent that can move adults to tears.
That’s the story of Lily Straughan, 11, and Joseph Chow, 8.
These young dancers took the stage on the BBC TV competition, “Greatest Dancer,” and left everyone in awe.
Their contemporary dance routine was so touching that it brought the judges to tears.
What’s even more astonishing is that Lily and Joseph had only been dancing together for a mere three months!
Inspired by another young dance couple they saw on the show’s previous season, they decided to give “The Greatest Dancer” a shot.
It’s a good thing they did too – because they ended up stealing the internet’s heart.
For those unfamiliar with the show’s format, “The Greatest Dancer” is a British competition that showcases dancers from various genres and age groups.
They all vie for a cash prize and a golden opportunity to perform on “Strictly Come Dancing.”
The show has a unique twist.
Initially, dancers are hidden from the audience by a wall.
However, as they dance, the audience watches them on video screens and votes.
If a dancer garners more than 75% approval, the mirrored wall opens, revealing them to the audience and allowing them to advance to the next round.
The young duo, dressed all in white, gave a spectacular contemporary performance.
As Lily and Joseph danced to the emotional song ‘Rise Up’ by Andra Day, the audience’s cheers were deafening even before the mirrored doors opened.
Their performance was so captivating that it was clear they were destined for greatness on the show.
Contemporary dance is a fluid dance genre that combines elements of several dance styles, including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet.
It seeks to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements, often allowing dancers to express their innermost emotions.
Unlike more structured forms of dance, contemporary often focuses on spontaneity and self-expression, with dancers encouraged to create their own movements.
This makes it a deeply personal and evocative form of dance, allowing both the dancer and the audience to connect on an emotional level.
It was clear that the young duo’s performance had an emotional effect on the judges.
They looked like they had tears in their eyes, and one judge admitted that he had chills.
There’s no denying it – Lily and Joseph are naturally gifted dancers.
Their performance on “The Greatest Dancer” showed their incredible talent, and the world took notice.
Their journey didn’t stop there.
They not only advanced to the next round but also became the first act to join Team Cheryl.
Although they weren’t crowned the final winners of the competition, there’s no doubt they’re going to go far with their gift.
Lily and Joseph’s “Rise Up” audition is so beautiful, it’s racked up over 10 million views on YouTube.
