Starting young at any skill can lead to some exciting things later in life. Take dance, for example! These young dancers began to shag dance at a young age, and now, they’re competing with other kids following the same suit.
What exactly is shag dancing?
The shag dance, also known as the collegiate shag, is a partner dance done primarily to uptempo swing and pre-swing jazz music. It belongs to the swing family of American vernacular dances that rose to popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. It’s not the only style of shag dancing, though.
There is also the Carolina shag, which is a partner dance to primarily beach music. The beats being 100-130 per minute in a 4/4 time signature.
It is called this because the dance itself came from the Carolinas, which makes sense that this video is in Myrtle Beach.
Shag dancing is more of a southern dance that has expanded all across America! It is nice to see these young kids carry on a classic, traditional dance.
Look at these kids dance!
This video starts with a pair of sixth-graders named Lizzie Batten and Trey Henley, who are dancing to a classic, uptempo “Honky Tonky” song.
While they stay together the whole time, their feet are doing most of the dancing!
They take turns spinning each other, and you can see they are enjoying themselves.
The next pair up is a seventh and an eighth-grader, Isabelle Welch and Kaleb Brown. Their song seems a little slower in tempo, but it also has that southern twang to it.
Their dancing is impeccable, Kaleb’s footwork is fun to watch, and you can tell he loves what he does, while Isabelle follows his lead perfectly!
Both of these pairs did terrific jobs, and it’s nice to see them both do their best.
These kids are incredibly talented and fun to watch. I wish I could bust a move like these kids; no wonder these pairs were in the Junior 1 Division.
Not only do you watch the older kids perform, just wait till you see the little kids.
After the older children have gone, it goes to second-graders named Brooke Farrier and Billy West. They are adorable, and at one point, little Billy breaks it down for us! Both of the little kids are enjoying themselves, and it seems to be a pleasant atmosphere.
Watching these kids of all ages in this video do what they love is heartwarming.
These competitions are pretty popular, and there are more videos to watch if you enjoyed this one! You can find kids of all ages performing these shag dancing competitions.
These kids are certainly tearing it up when it comes to shag dancing. Watch the entire video below.
