Have you ever been so mesmerized watching someone dance that you forgot everything else?

That’s what happened when dancers Jordan Frisbee and Torri Zzaoui hit the stage at the 2019 OPEN Swing Dance Championships. The audience was immediately captivated. The moment this duo appeared it was clear their age didn’t matter — they were there to win.

As the song began, you could already tell they were enjoying themselves. The number was set to the 1989 hit “Charlene” by Carl Perkins — a perfect song for West Coast Swing.

They moved in perfect unison. Everyone could see how much fun they were having. But amazingly, the dance wasn’t choreographed in the slightest. The performance was in the “Strictly” category of the competition.

That meant they were able to choose their partner, but not the song.

They also didn’t have the chance to practice beforehand. They simply hit the stage and cut a rug. While they were technically amazing, the real pleasure in watching Jordan and Torri dance was seeing their enjoyment of the music. They moved so well together, the performance was palpable.

It didn’t escape the judges, and it also wasn’t lost on online audiences

“The beauty is in the great technique in every step; hitches, rolling counts, rolling feet, syncopation and just dancing well,” said one commenter. “No need for flips and high-flying death drops. Just dance well with style and flair. Love it.”

They’ve likely danced together many times over the years

They may have even danced to that particular number before…although again, it wasn’t choreographed. They just know one another and West Coast Swing so well, it looked as though they’ve performed this piece 100 times.

This duo made a powerful impression

“Although we can never truly tell if it’s real or not, it’s nice to see Jordan appearing to genuinely be enjoying the dance – which made me enjoy watching it,” said another commenter

Their skill wasn’t lost on the judges, who gave them first place for their performance. It just goes to show how talented they are. Can you imagine improvising a dance number as you go, and in front of a panel of judges and an audience?

“Everyone mentions Jordan’s talent, but really, Tori is the star here,” said another commenter.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for the great West Coast Swing,” said a commenter. “Finally, excellent choice of music Jordan. I miss the old swing music. Charlene is an oldie but a goodie I was pleasantly surprised.”

They stole the show

“Torri’s fluid, natural movement and beautifully unmatched footwork pull Jordan’s partnership skills up to another level. Yet, the technical prowess is still front and center. They are a joy to watch and an inspiration.”
