There’s a good chance you’ve seen and heard a street performer at some point in your life. The majority of them are adults looking for a way to earn money. The type of performance varies. Sometimes, it involves magic and other times, music. Regardless, they’re usually fun to listen to.
Once in a while, people come across a street performer who’s just a kid. We have to give them a lot of credit for having the courage to stand in front of total strangers. But that doesn’t mean they’re all good. On the other hand, some buskers are fantastic. That’s the case with a boy who performed “Fast Car.”
Not only does he sing but he also plays a mean guitar.
For singing and playing, this boy gets extra credit. Then considering he chose a relatively difficult piece to perform, you have to admire him. The coolest part — he’s not just good — he’s incredible. This kid has some serious talent to work with.
He’s an amazing busker.
In case you didn’t know, the term “busker” refers to a person who performs on the street in exchange for monetary donations. However, some people reward these performers with other things, including food and even gifts. Busking has a long history and today, it’s done all around the globe. Along with the streets, buskers often perform at subway and train stations.
This isn’t the easiest song to perform.
Recorded by Tracy Chapman, the lyrics to “Fast Car” are about a relationship and some of the complications that go along with that. One section of the song includes the words, “You got a fast car but is it fast enough so we can fly away? We gotta make a decision, we leave tonight or live and die this way.”
Standing there with his guitar and a mic, this busker named Alfie Sheard makes a lasting impression.
Someone needs to sign this kid to a record deal now. He has a unique voice that commands your attention. That combined with perfect guitar playing, he’s young but also mesmerizing. Alfie sings every word with confidence and being so good, it’s easy to understand why. His style is somewhat reminiscent of that of Ben Folds.
Listeners gladly donate.
As soon as he nears the end of the song, people come forward to drop money into his open guitar case. With a voice like that, he deserves every cent earned. At just 15 years old, Alfie is already making quite the name for himself.
Who knows how long he’ll keep busking?
There’s a sense of gratification that comes from performing on the streets. Many musicians believe it keeps them humble while allowing them to have a more intimate interaction with the people who stop and listen. Just watching him perform, there’s no denying Alfie loves what he does and he takes his music seriously. Tracy Chapman must’ve been proud of this rendition of Fast Cars.
He performs cover songs by famous artists like Justin Bieber. But he also writes a lot of his music. In addition to busking, he’s performed at some popular venues like London’s O2 Arena. Keep up kid…for you, the sky’s the limit. I have a feeling it won’t be long before he cuts his first album. I know one thing’s for sure…I’ll buy it.
