A young boy named Malakai Bayoh made a big splash during his first audition on Britain’s Got Talent. He even impressed the notoriously grumpy Simon Cowell.
The thirteen-year-old from London began his audition by telling Simon that he dreams of being a singer.
He went on to explain that he began at the age of 7, just after his mother made him join the choir “because she’s very bossy.”
He’s a funny kid but Bayoh went on to sing an angelic rendition of “Pie Jesu” during his audition.
Malakai’s mom and sister cheered him on from the audience, with his mom looking even more nervous than her son.
It was evident from the moment he opened his mouth that he would become a hit with the show’s judges.
Simon Cowell, Bruno Tonioli, Amanda Holden, and Alesha Dixon’s jaws dropped as the audience erupted in cheers.
Talk about casting a spell!
His mom shared that her son was booed on stage once, fearing that the moment could shatter Malakai’s confidence.
But he is a strong kid and he proves it by impressing the notoriously tough Simon.
Cowell was all smiles for each time the camera focused on him as Malakai’s voice soared across the hall.
Here’s a fun fact about Malakai.
This teenager is no stranger to fame, having made his debut at the Royal Opera House.
He sang the role of Oberto in the opera Alcina. In December last year, his festive performances with Aled Jones went viral, so some viewers soon identified the kid on Britain’s Got Talent.
The Royal Opera House gave a lifetime ban to one audience member, the one who booed Malakai’s performance.
Malakai is unbelievably impressive, as this one viewer noted,
“There is something wonderfully pure about this whole performance. To go out there, aged just 13, in straightforward clothes, nothing fancy, no overacting, and sing like that….pure joy.
And then to watch his reaction…! I love that he stuffs a handful of the gold into his pocket! The best of humanity right there.”
This kid from London has a very bright future.
And as Bayoh finished his song, a standing ovation from all four judges and the audience met his beaming face.
Cowell winks at the teenager, who looked to be overwhelmed at the reaction to his singing.
“If there’s any one word I could use to describe that … golden,” Cowell says.
And that’s when Simon pressed the “Golden Buzzer,” which sent Malakai straight to the finals.
Golden confetti rained down causing Malakai to make snow angels on the floor.
Cowell got up and quickly joined him on stage.
“Come here,” he said, embracing Bayoh. “How amazing was that. I mean seriously, seriously good. One of the best voices I think I’ve ever heard for someone your age. I mean this is amazing.”
The two then grabbed a few fistfuls of the golden confetti with Bayoh stuffing them into his pants pocket.
The other judges were still on their feet!
“I was in tears because you really touched me,” Tonioli said. “And it’s very simple, you sang like an angel.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming on this show,” Cowell said. “Really, it means a lot.”
Malakai’s voice is incredible, and it’s easy to see why he got so much love from the judges.
