If you spend much time surfing the internet, you’re bound to come across some interesting performers.

In the old days of media, the only real way to make a career was to perform in-person to gradually build an audience before pitching yourself to a big studio or company somewhere.

In 2019, people can take directly to YouTube to market themselves and to build a following there. While plenty of bigger artists post directly on YouTube as well, it’s a particularly useful platform for anyone looking to grow their following.

And that’s definitely the case for the artist in today’s video.

The musician we’re discussing is Xavier Rudd, an Australian singer-songwriter who plays multiple instruments.

Though Rudd definitely has a wide fan base, he’s not exactly a household name. Regardless, he’s a talented player who tends to write songs using certain Australian aboriginal sounds as well as themes of environmentalism and spirituality.

As it turns out, Rudd has mixed heritage and is partially indigenous Australian as well. In any event, his unique background and musical influences often come together to produce beautiful music.

And this song is a great example.

The song we’re talking about is “Follow the Sun,” an original by Rudd that was posted in February 2012.

As the clip begins, a time-lapse video of the Australian coastline can be seen while Rudd gently plucks a beautiful guitar melody.

As the video continues, there’s footage of all kinds of the country’s most beautiful animals and creatures—among them are tree lizards and dolphins. A moment later, Rudd can be seen sitting cross-legged in the grass playing his guitar.

Like the rest of the video, his voice is beautiful.

As the song goes on, Rudd’s message of peaceful living and harmony comes through more and more.

What Rudd sings about most of all is cherishing the present moment and always staying positive and hopeful. As it goes on, Rudd also shows his multi-instrumental background by blowing on the harmonica all while playing guitar.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of indigenous dancers in the video showcasing the same culture that Rudd sings about.

Since the clip was posted, it has been viewed nearly 35 million times!

Though it goes without saying, Rudd is a unique voice in what seems to be a newly emerging genre.

Although most of what we find on YouTube is pop music and other contemporary stuff, word music also has a huge presence. Beyond that, there are also people who are innovating and working their own background and musical influences into their body of work.

If you liked this video, Rudd also has plenty of other songs on his channel that are just as beautiful. Another of his songs worth watching is “Walk Away,” a tune with similar messages and sounds:

Above all, it’s clear that Rudd is talented and that he deserves more exposure!

While there’s plenty of music out there about materialism and pop culture, there are a lot fewer songs out there about peace and harmony on Earth.
