Each person has a story to tell, and sometimes, music is the only thing that could help.

Last March 6, 2022, Lady K, a 25-year-old contestant from Tuskegee, Tennessee, touched everyone’s heart, especially the judges, with her life story and beautiful song.

When Lady K went up the stage, she gave all three judges three cards, asking them not to open them yet. She said whether she wins or not, she wanted to give all three judges a token of her appreciation.

She then started telling her story.

Lady K said that life was rough for her and her family. There was one time when they had to live in a shelter to survive. They were together, and they had each other.

For many years, Lady K’s family made it work.

“I’m the oldest so I instantly wanted to step up and help out. My brother Papi was a really tough, cool, laid-back type of person. I knew we all had it hard, but at some point, it was all too much for my brother.”

They never thought that Papi was dealing with depression.

One day, they were shocked by the news of Papi’s passing. He committed suicide.

“That was one of the hardest things my family ever had to go through,” Lady K said, tears flowing from her cheeks. “It was hard to decide if paying rent was going to come first because we need somewhere to live or paying for a funeral because we don’t have our brother anymore.”

Life was difficult, but they couldn’t give up, especially Lady K.

There were two roads to choose from following Papi’s death. Lady K could move forward or succumb to the resentment of having a hard life.

Papi’s death started a fire inside Lady K. That sad event gave her more purpose. She wanted to live so she could honor him and make her family proud.

If not now, when? She had to reach for her dreams. She wanted to stand up, stronger than ever, and ready to face life, and for that, she told the judges that she would be singing “Wide Awake” by none-other-than Katy Perry.

Everyone thought she would just sing it, but Lady K owned the song.

Every line will touch your heart.

Each word from the lyrics was a part of her. Lady K sang the song from her heart, from her pain, and from her life experiences.

All three judges were quiet, listening to how Lady K sang the song. The song ended with the three judges teary-eyed.

After the song, Katy joked and said, “How dare you,” to which Lady K answered:

“It was the best song I could find to symbolize my journey and everything I’ve been through in my life,” Lady K told her idol judge. “Every song that I’ve ever attached myself to from you has been for the underdogs for people like me to just know that whatever the hell is going on, you can make it through.”

Katy Perry’s songs gave Lady K hope and inspiration.

“You sang with such elegance, beauty, grace and filigree,” said Perry, still teary-eyed. “It’s like you reinvented the song. It’s like your heart is singing through your vocal cords.”

Everyone agreed.

Luke Bryan said that the song flows and it was so honest. He even said that it was magic.

Not everyone can sing a song and share their feelings with it. That’s what made Lady K special.

“I’m so proud,” said judge Richie. “Tuskegee will never be the same. I know you landed there for a purpose. You sang a Katy Perry song and turned it into you. Then you made Katy Perry cry.”

Imagine that? A contestant singing a judge’s hit song and making the original singer cry. It’s out of this world, but it’s true.

Once you hear Lady K sing, you’ll feel a part of her. You will feel the sincerity and the pureness of the song.

“You’re why we’re here, I’m here,” concluded Luke Bryan before asking Lady K to get the Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
