Ballet is a type of performance dance that originated in the 15th century.
It was first popular in Italy and was later developed into a concert dance form in Russia and France. “Ballet” is a French word which comes from Latin “ballo,” and it means “to dance.” Did you know that the first ballet dancers were all men? Women weren’t allowed to join in.
Luckily, a lot has changed since then, and today women can perform.
They can even act like ballet spiders if the choreography demands it! See it for yourself—in this video, Milena successfully pulls off the eight-legged theme with her two hands and two legs.
This is definitely modern ballet in contrast to traditional, classical ballet dance.
A true evolution has happened in the ballet world since its beginnings during the Italian Rennaissance.
Traditional classical ballets are usually performed with classical music, and they use elaborate costumes and staging. Ballerina’s hair buns are famous for their complexity—each one needs hours and hours of styling before it’s ready for performance.
And did you know that a tutu can cost up to $3,000 to make?
In contrast to that, neoclassical ballet works are often performed in simple costumes, mostly leotards and tights. Elaborate scenery is not required either.
What we are seeing in the video is a modern ballet routine by a professional ballerina Milena Sidorova.
We must admit that we love the contrast between the traditional and the modern in ballet. Since King Louis XIV started the Royal Dance Academy to establish ballet standards, the beauty of traditional ballet has been widely recognizable and appreciated. Of course, the touch of contemporary is eventually added to everything, and the ballet was no exception.
Milena’s world-famous choreography “The Spider” has been performed all over the globe.
An award-winning Dutch choreographer and a professional ballerina, Milena Sidorova has become quite famous after her original ballet performances spread all over the internet. Sidorova has created 20 unique, modern ballet choreographies, including several for the Dutch National Ballet.
Milena’s two latest choreographies “SAND” and “A.I.” have been selected for International Draft Works 2019, and will be performed at the Royal Opera House in London.
“The Spider” alone got more than 13 million YouTube views, and 13,300 people follow Milena on Instagram. For more information about the upcoming works and events, visit Sidorova’s official website.
“The Spider” dance is a piece that combines some complex dance moves, including the spider walk.
This is one of those choreographies that you’ll have to see a few times. It is innovative, new, different and even funny at times. Milena draws you in, makes you watch it and then leaves you with a lot of questions.
The first question that popped up for us was how much time did she spend to perfect those beautiful moves?
Milena has such amazing balance, and not many people could pull this off as effortlessly as she did. Even if no one told you the name of the choreography, you would have guessed it right away.
It’s outstanding just how she managed to achieve a dance that resembles so much spider’s moves. Very supple indeed.

Sidorova stated that she tends to explore several ideas and techniques and to expand them into full-scale choreographies.
One idea is the influence of technology on our behavior and the way we approach communication. Seems like an excellent idea, especially coming from someone who communicates through dance.
Good luck Milena, we can’t wait to see your newest projects!
