When you hear the song title “Always On My Mind”, undoubtedly Willie Nelson will come directly to mind.
However, the evolution of the song first took place in the 1970s when Wayne Carson originally penned a couple of verses.
Over time, he was joined by two other songwriters, Mark James and Johnny Christopher, who helped him finish writing the song we know and love today.
Over the decades it has been covered by countless artists.
Elvis’s version became a crossover hit.
It hit with country and pop audiences alike.
Willie Nelson’s is the most notable.
Willie Nelsonâs rendition has become beloved by many of his fans.
Nelson simply has a way of tugging at your heartstrings when he sings just about any song.
His voice is so melodic and has so much life behind it.
Willie passed his talent on.
As it turns out, Willieâs son, Lukas, also caught the bug to perform.
While he started off touring with his infamous father, he now has his own project called âLukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.â
His tunes are reminiscent of his fatherâs, but you can tell that heâs forged his own way through the music world with his own distinct voice.
That doesnât mean he doesnât love singing his fatherâs songs, too.
One evening during a casual jam session with some fellow talented musicians, Lukas decided to pull out the tune âAlways on my Mindâ as a stripped version.
Accompanied by nothing but a piano and a trumpet, he let his voice soar.
It was raw and lovely.
There is something so charming about a simple arrangement of a song. There are no frills to cover up any mistakes or lackluster notes.
Luckily for Lukas, he does his father great justice with his performance.
Casually leaning onto a ledge and facing the pianist, he sets the scene for an intimate performance.
Wearing a green button-up shirt in dim lighting, Luke is purely himself.
Iâm sure this is a moment that everyone in the room was honored to be there and experience this moment with him.
The “band” also possess great talent.
The trumpet solo is beautifully played, followed by a touching piano feature.
Oftentimes, not enough credit is given to the accompanists of great musicians, but without them, singers would have no support to elevate their beautiful voices even higher.
If this stripped-bare deliverance of a sentimental cover song is any indication, we can expect great music from Lukas Nelson.
