Going shopping for groceries is one of the most commonplace things that we ever do in life.

When we’re out running errands, we don’t really think much about what we’re doing and we don’t expect to see much out of the ordinary. We usually only pay close attention in life when something special or strange is happening, not when we’re going about our daily life. Fortunately, the internet has brought all kinds of spontaneous performances to the world—so there’s always a chance you might run into one of them in our real life.

This video is one of those special circumstances.

To promote one of their the Washington Nation Opera wanted to do a bit of a flash mob of their own.

More specifically, the group behind this flash mob performance was the organization’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist program. The program in question is designed to provide promising and upcoming opera talent intensive study opportunities and career guidance so that they can take their skills international. To do their flash mob performance, the group decided to stage a show at a local Whole Foods.

Needless to say, nobody was expecting what they saw that day.

It all starts when opera music starts playing in the store and customers begin to turn their heads.

The music is the song Brindisi from Verdi’s opera La Traviata. The music is instantly recognizable, even for those not very familiar with opera. After that, a man wearing a hat dressed in a Whole Foods uniform emerges from behind one of the shelves of fruit.

In no time at all, he’s belting out the song with perfect pitch and walking around the store serenading everyone he sees!

Still, the performance is only just starting.

Before long, the man is singing directly to another woman standing by another shelf of fruit.

After his part is finished, the woman starts singing as well. By this point, the crowd realizes what’s happening and that they’re watching a bonafide opera performance!

The other woman is also dressed like a normal Whole Foods employee, but you won’t believe how incredible her voice is. The crowd gathering around the opera singer is getting larger by now and shortly after, the woman’s part is finished.

With that done, the two of them start dancing!

The dancing continues for a moment before even more members of the crew get in on the action.

Before long, everyone wearing a uniform is belting out the notes. At the very end of the performance, all of the actors sing the last few notes together, hitting a particularly high one to end the performance!

When it’s all over, the entire crowd starts clapping.

Although we’re not particularly familiar with opera, there’s still something hilarious and awesome about this performance. Though it goes without saying, the Washington National Opera’s strategy definitely worked to raise awareness for their program.
