Whitney Houston is widely known as one of the greatest voices of all time.
Her ability to hit the highest notes possible skyrocketed her to stardom in 1985 with her debut, self-titled album. In this 1991 Super Bowl performance of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” Houston radiates power and touches viewers all around the world.
This brought tears to my eyes—no one can compete with Houston!
At Super Bowl XXV between the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants, Houston did one of the most incredible performances of “Star-Spangled Banner” to date.
The big game came at a rather restless time for the United States. We had just entered the Gulf War in order to liberate Kuwait, and just 10 days prior, we dropped the first bombs on Iraq in what was called “Operation Desert Storm.”
With the circumstances going on in our country, the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida was kicked off with an extremely patriotic performance by Houston that gave America tears of gratitude.
Wearing red, white and blue, Houston started off by waving to a cheering crowd before showcasing her amazing vocal range.
With an ensemble playing in the background, Houston begins to sing those famous first words, “oh say can you see,” and it’s immediately apparent that this is something special. She goes through the meaningful song word for word, every note better than the last.
You can see soldiers saluting and the crowd singing along as the camera angle switches to close-ups of Houston’s beautiful face. Not only did she have a sensational voice, but she also had one of the most gorgeous smiles you’ll ever see that she flashes as she sings.
When she gets to the words “and the rockets red glare,” Houston hits notes that most singers only dream of.
It’s hard to believe that any human being can sing this beautifully…but towards the end of the song, she takes it to another level. With her voice echoing through the stadium, Houston shows us why she was a Grammy-winning artist. You can feel the sense of pride she has for her country, inspiring people all around America.
Everything about her performance will give you chills.
She gave millions of people hope in a time when they needed it most. Throughout the last part of the “Star-Spangled Banner” performance, Houston lets out a barrage of spectacular musical melodies that will permeate your body and soul.
At the end of the song, the spectators go absolutely wild as the fighter jets fly over the stadium.
The phenomenal performance by Houston went down in history as one of the most important and memorable Super Bowl openings ever—even today it stops people in their tracks and moves them!
YouTube wasn’t around yet in 1991, but once it was created user CavBuffaloSoldier uploaded a video of the Super Bowl XXV opening that went massively viral.
Over 27.5 million people have viewed the performance on YouTube, with a whopping 277,000 likes.
Whitney Houston was so breathtaking to watch.
Her untimely death doesn’t stop people from emphatically listening to her music to this very day. Some people have musical abilities that are out of this world, and she was one of them.
