The Shag.
It’s a popular dance commonly associated with the beach towns of North and South Carolina.
It is a two person dance led by the man with basic steps that leave a lot of room for improvisation and imagination.
This is a quick, fun, and very social dance, which is what makes it the perfect dance to know for a party.
And the south does love to party.
Knowing how to dance gets you in to those social circles.
It looks easy when it actually is not.
The dance is so southern, the Carolina Shag has lived on to being described as a “cold beer on a warm night with a hot date and no plans for tomorrow.”
It’s history is vague but it has grown in popularity especially with the youth who would frequent the bars and beaches.
Meet Mack West and Trinity Davis.
Mack and Trinity are Grand National Champions.
These two are well known in the dance community and rightfully so.
At their young ages, they have amassed quite a following and all because of their amazing skill.
You would not think these kids could move like they do but prepare to be surprised.
They take their places and are ready to wow the audience.
Set to Kelley Hunt’s “Queen of the 88’s”, they look every part of the dance culture they are in.
Bright colors and wide smiles are on hand too as they prepare to entertain the crowd.
The piano intro sees these two stepping and twisting in opposite directions with Trinity’s smile lighting up the entire room.
They move so well together.
Mack then proceeds to show his fancy footwork and you can see the smiles in the background.
It’s like he’s got no bones in his legs!
With perfect timing to the music, the young dancers twist and twirl their way back and forth towards each other, Trinity mirroring Mack’s dazzling movements.
He is quick and smooth.
It goes from left to right, forwards and backwards following a basic count while shifting one’s weight from one leg to the other.
It may be a male led dance but their flow is so fluid it’s hard to tell if one is even being led by the other.
They make it look so easy! Trinity certainly looks like she’s having a lot of fun.
Forget about kids today with their faces buried on social media.
These two spend their free time dancing!
Fancy footwork and smiles all around.
After a few, okay a lot, of fancy spins together, they dip and swing their hips to the amazement of the audience.
It’s a wonder they don’t get dizzy.
Now Mack twists and spins until he’s almost sitting on the dance floor but he is bending his knees left and right to the beat before springing back up for a few more spins.
This kid is unbelievable.
Those knees must be made from jello.
Who knows how many hours and sore body parts it took for them to be this good.
It’s just so much fun to watch!
They are so good the elderly are smiling and the adults are bopping their heads along to the amazing show in front of them.
And they would know. It is a dance of their era.
Mack decides to take it up a notch with this twist and spring like step.
With an ooh and aah from the onlookers, Mack shifts in to a higher gear and even Trinity can’t help but watch and smile. You’d think she’s seen it all.
They don’t even look tired. Not a single sweat nor do they look out of breath.
Talk about talent!
A fantastic finale brings the audience to their feet.
With amazing smoothness and grace, the dance ends and it’s a standing ovation for Mack and Trinity.
They just keep reminding everyone why they are the champions of the junior shag.
