While it goes without saying, there are so many talented people in the world just waiting to be discovered.
Ever since the rise of reality shows, it seems like there are more and more platforms for people to get discovered—and for them to thrive.
Though the whole phenomenon may have started with American Idol, it has spread into all kinds of other shows as well including the Got Talent franchise and The Voice. Through these shows and others, sometimes amazing talents can be unearthed.
And the performance we’re talking about today is definitely one of those cases.
The clip took place on the 2016 season of The Voice UK.
The performer in question was a young woman named Cody Frost. Though she was young, she chose to sing ABBA’s classic song “Lay All Your Love On Me.” For those who know the original, it’s a considerably upbeat and danceable song.
Still, Frost turns it into something completely new and unique—and the judges can’t even really tell what song it is from the beginning! Behind their chairs, they’re asking each other if the person singing is a boy or a girl.
Still, Frost gets more and more confident as she goes along.
As the song builds, her voice gets more powerful and more haunting.
When she gets to the chorus, everyone seems to finally figure out what’s going on. With that, she gets one buzzer… and then another. A moment later, she gets yet another!
By this point, she’s absolutely belting the lyrics to the song and giving the audience goosebumps. Although ABBA are known for their fun party songs, secretly many of them have much darker themes.
Though it goes without saying, Frost was the perfect person to bring those themes out with her voice.
By the time the song is over, the intensity has gone through the roof and some of the judges are even standing up in their chairs.
After a few last huge notes, she hits the final lyrics of the song and brings it all to a close. When it’s over, the audience gives her an enormous round of applause.
Although we’re used to seeing engaging performances on these shows, few of them are as unique or as haunting as this one was. Since the clip was loaded onto YouTube, it has been viewed some eight million times and it’s easy to see why.
Needless to say, Frost was definitely a highlight on that season!
When it comes down to it, Frost’s audition proves once again just how much personality you can bring to something that’s already been done.
In these auditions, it’s important to have a good voice but it’s also important to pick the right song. In Frost’s case, picking ABBA was a way to take everybody off guard as well as a way for her to let her own personality shine.
Although her voice was definitely powerful as well, what really came through was just how creative she could be. After seeing this, it’s clear that we’re going to be seeing more of Frost in the music industry down the line!
