Ever since the advent of reality television, it’s been a staple of what America watches.
No matter what kind of shows you like to watch, chances are that there’s a reality television version of it. eIf you want to see something about dating, there’s always The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. If you want something fashion-related, Project Runway is your best bet. Aside from these event-based or themed shows, though, there’s one type of reality show that seems to dominate reality television worldwide.
If you haven’t guessed yet, we’re talking about singing and dancing talent shows.
No matter who you are or where you live, chances are you’ve seen at least one of these.
Whether we’re talking about American Idol or The X Factor, it’s pretty clear why people enjoy these types of programs. Each one gives us the opportunity to see an array of talented performers we’ve never heard of before, and each gives us the chance to cheer for an underdog. Still, what some people don’t know is that different countries around the world have their own versions of these shows.
The clip we’re talking about today, for example, is from The Voice of Holland.
For anyone who doesn’t know, The Voice works a little bit differently than some other reality shows.
On shows like American Idol, the competition is relatively straightforward—the show begins with many contestants who gradually get whittled down until there’s one winner. On The Voice, there’s a panel of judges who create teams of talented singers, coaching them along the way. At the end, there’s a winning contestant and a winning coach! There’s also an initial blind audition phase of the show where the judges have to select who will be on their teams.
And often, these blind auditions are one of the most exciting parts of the whole show.
In one episode, a man named David Dam stepped out and was ready to perform for the judges.
As the music starts, it’s clear that what’s playing is “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye. For anyone who doesn’t know the song, it’s a passionate love song and a particularly challenging one to sing.
Regardless, Dam steps out and starts belting the song immediately. Without missing a beat, he immediately starts belting out the iconic first lyrics while the judges have their backs turned.
His voice is so powerful that two of the judges smash their buttons immediately and turn around to face him.
Dam continues his performance, going from high to low notes without breaking a sweat.
Before long, one of the judges is out of her chair and dancing onstage with Dam! Before long, another one of the judges is up on the stage as well. As the song goes on, Dam’s performance only gets better and better. Before long, everybody is our of their chairs and dancing with Dam on the main stage.
Needless to say, the entire crowd loved his performance!
Although most people think of The Voice as an American show, the Dutch version was actually the first one!
And after seeing this audition, we’re not surprised—if there are more people in Holland who are as talented as Dam is, they all need to get record contracts! Regardless of if you watch the show regularly or not, there’s no denying that this was an audition for the record books.
Congratulations to David Dam on an incredible performance! Check the full clip out below:
