If you’ve never heard of the Russian singer Vitas, then you’re missing out.
Even if his genre isn’t exactly your thing, you’ll find something to love about this guy, I can pretty much guarantee it! Once you see the video, you simply won’t be able to deny his natural talent.
Vitas sings a version of electronic dance music, and he was a huge thing around the turn of the new millennium.
His unique voice is truly unlike anything you’ve ever heard and anything you’ll ever hear again!
This man is the brains behind his whole show, from his costumes, the stage setups, and the name of the band that accompanies him: DIVA. He saw great success in Russia and throughout Asia at the peak of his career, making quite the good name for himself.
This little number, “Opera #2,” was the song that brought Vitas into the Russian spotlight – people were just captivated by his unmatched range.
With a five-octave vocal range, his voice reaches up into the stratosphere. How many times have you heard a grown man sing this high up in the clouds? I’ll bet you that you never have before!
For this particular performance, DIVA is fully enrobed in black cloaks. With their faces hidden they eerily play their instruments in support of the unbelievable vocal gymnastics that are about to happen.
While he’s singing in Russian, the whole effect of the performance isn’t at all lost. His stage presence is so unique to him, and the tone of his voice is unreal.
There’s a reason that this song is still getting millions of views across different versions and performances nearly two decades later. It doesn’t matter if the genre isn’t exactly what you’d normally listen to, or if you don’t happen to speak the Russian language. That’s what so great about music – you can get the feeling of the song just from the delivery from the performer!
The lyrics to this song are just as dramatic as the performance itself, with the first verse starting with some very ominous words:
“My house has been built
But I am alone here
The door banged behind my back
An autumn wind knocking on the window
Crying over me all over again
Thunderstorm at night and fog in the morning
The sun has turned completely cold
Old pains are following one another
Let them all get together”
Then the chorus, of course, is that shockingly high sing-songy vocalization.
Now, whether you find humor in this performance, whether you’re genuinely impressed, or maybe a little bit of both, you can’t deny that there’s some kind of weird spell that this video puts on you! It’s so eerie and bizarre, but you can’t look away!
What do you think of this performance? Are you intrigued by this slightly strange musician? Would you recommend this artist to your friends?
