No matter how long The Voice is on the air, every season finds at least one new way to surprise someone.
For anyone who doesn’t know, The Voice is a reality singing competition show that works a little bit differently than many other shows.
Unlike American Idol, all the contestants must do “blind auditions” before a panel of judges who have their backs turned. If they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and recruit the contestant onto their team.
Needless to say, this structure leads to all kinds of great reveals.
What many people don’t know as well is that The Voice is an international franchise.
Although we’re used to watching the American version of the show, plenty of the international versions have had their own memorable contestants.
In particular, one of the show’s most exciting and unique auditions came from a contestant on the French version of the show in 2017. Like any other audition, the contestant, Vincent Vinel, walked out on stage and prepared himself to perform.
Still, nobody in the audience was ready for what followed.
One unique thing about Vinel, however, is that he needed help being guided to the piano.
Still, although Vinel is blind, he definitely didn’t any help performing incredibly. As soon as he sits down in front of the piano, he starts playing some incredible scales and singing in a huge, operatic voice.
Immediately, all the judges’ ears perk up—this is definitely different than all the other contestants who have come so far! Although nobody knows what he’s performing yet, it soon becomes clear.
After a moment, he sets into a unique interpretation of Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself.”
Although he’s playing piano and rapping the beginning, Vinel quickly transitions into a singing voice to finish the song.
After just the intro of the song, Vinel already has two of the judges hitting their buzzers to turn around. When he finally gets to the chorus, one of the judges’ jaws drops—it wasn’t even entirely clear what song he was covering up to that point!
He gets another judge to buzz in as well and for the grand finale, he hits several whistle tone high notes that absolutely nobody expected. At the very end, he does a long piano trill and wraps the song up.
At that, the crowd gets on their feet and gives him a huge round of applause.
Although plenty of contestants go on The Voice and do faithful covers of their source material, Vinel completely reinvented his song!
Though it definitely takes raw talent to make a good impression on the judges on these shows, it also takes stage presence and a unique point-of-view. Though it goes without saying, Vinel delivered everything in spades—and he even surprised the audience with his technical abilities given that he couldn’t see.
Although some of these singing competition shows can seem repetitive after a while, moments like this prove why they’re as popular as they are. If you watch long enough, you’re bound to see something that surprises you!
Congratulations to Vincent Vinel for a truly electrifying performance! Check out the full thing in the link below:
